NHRA STARS CIRCLE TRACK RACING IN BRISTOL

What would happen if some of NHRA's biggest stars decided to try their luck at one of NASCAR's most famous tracks? The answer to that will be determined Saturday, May 17, as Bristol Motor Speedway welcomes drag racing's best in their quest to tame the World's Fastest Half-Mile.

Bristol Dragway plays host to the O'Reilly NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals presented by Q May 16-18, and this year a number of NHRA drivers will get a chance to do something most of them never have: take on the legendary half-mile oval.

On Saturday evening, after a full day of action at Bristol Dragway with speeds topping 320 mph and elapsed times of less than five seconds, drivers will venture -- at a slower pace -- across the creek to Bristol Motor Speedway.

On Saturday evening, after a full day of action at Bristol Dragway with speeds topping 320 mph and elapsed times of less than five seconds, drivers will venture -- at a slower pace -- across the creek to Bristol Motor Speedway.

Once there, they will take part in the NHRA Circle Track Challenge, a 25-lap race at the .533-mile oval that will test their skills and give race fans a unique opportunity to see their favorite drag racing stars in a totally different atmosphere.

Some of the drivers expected to participate include former Bristol Dragway winners Tony Schumacher, Gary Scelzi, Ron Capps, Jeg Coughlin, Greg Anderson, Jason Line, and Doug Kalitta, and a number of others are expected to be added to the roster.

The NHRA drivers will be racing street stock cars – basic late-model passenger cars with roll cages. They will drive 12 laps, then turn their rides over to their street stock partner, the owner of the car, who then will run the final 13 laps. An NHRA winner will be crowned after the first 12-lap segment, and the starting positions for the street stock drivers for the final 13 laps will be determined by the finishing order of their NHRA teammates. A second segment winner also will be crowned.

A 30-lap Pro Challenge event follows the NHRA Circle Track Challenge, followed by a 25-lap Charger race. The War Wizard, a monster truck, will be on hand to crush school buses, then the UARA stars will take the green flag for a 150-lap event, followed by an appliance race, which will feature stock cars racing with major appliances strapped to them.

The night begins with the NHRA Circle Track Challenge at 7 p.m. The evening concludes with a fireworks show after the UARA 150-lap feature. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m.

General admission tickets are $15, and children 12 and under will be admitted free with a ticketed adult. Anyone attending the O'Reilly NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals on Saturday can show their ticket stub at the BMS gate and receive $5 off the ticket price.

Pit passes may be purchased for $35. No one under the age of 15 will be admitted to the pits. Anyone 18 and under must have a parent sign a waiver for admittance to the pit area.
