MASON MCGAHA LEADS FIRST DAY OF PRO STOCK QUALIFYING IN NEW HAMPSHIRE

Mason McGaha is attempting to make personal history this weekend.

The young NHRA Camping World Series Pro Stock driver is trying to capture his first No. 1 qualifying position.

McGaha is the provisional No. 1 qualifier at the Tascaparts.com New England Nationals after clocking a 6.538-second run at 210.28 mph in Friday’s lone qualifying session at New England Dragway.

"I don’t even know what to say right now,” McGaha said. “I had no idea I was No. 1 until everyone was telling me. It was a pretty good run and hopefully we can hold on after the two runs (Saturday).

McGaha, the son of eight-time NHRA Pro Stock national event winner Chris McGaha, is competing in his 14th career NHRA Pro Stock race.

The Harlow Sammons Racing team of Chris and Mason were without Chris’ father and Mason’s grandfather, Lester in the pits. Chris posted on Facebook that Lester is recovering from a bout with COVID-19.

“He’s doing good,” said Mason of Lester. “I am his chauffer right now, driving him around at work and he’s ready to get out of the house and get back here with everyone.”

While Mason was celebrating sitting in the top spot, his father slowed to a 35.927-second run and is No. 15 on the ladder.

“We always go back and forth with each other, and mess with each other and I’m going to have to see what I can do, and maybe we can get him No. 2,” Mason said.

Mason arrived in Epping fourth in the points after five races. He has one runner-up and two semifinal performances. He best qualifying performance this season was sixth at the Charlotte, N.C., Four-Wide race last month.
