CLASSIC DRAG RACING ACTION IN YOUR LIVING ROOM

Jamie Jackson had no idea how crucial a 1961 match race between Sammy Hale and “Sneaky” Pete Robinson would be in preserving drag racing’s history. He was awestruck at the presentation of sounds and speed.

While photography was the preferred way of capturing the intensity of the straight-line sport, Jackson believed this was so inadequate in presenting the way it really was. Now joined by his older brother Sonny, the siblings borrowed their parents’ 8 mm Brownie Hawkeye movie camera, which used Kodak color film.

“I've labored over this for a long time and spoken about it a lot, but it's worth repeating: drag racing is hard,” said Wes Buck, founder and editorial director, Drag Illustrated. “This is an extremely competitive sport with some of the highest of highs and lowest of lows – sometimes coming in the same weekend. You don't see 'undefeated' drag racers. This is a sport where losing is simply part of the game, it's part of the journey, and, honestly, I think that is why this community is full of such incredible human beings...because that's what this sport, this level of competition, oftentimes produces.

BALDWIN, BARNETT PULL CLOSER TO CLINCHING FAN-VOTE SERIES CHAMPIONSHIPS WITH WINS

Top Fuel's Krista Baldwin and Pro Modified's Lyle Barnett pulled closer to clinching their first Virtual Reality Hot Rod Association series championships by winning their fifth race. The Strange Engineering Be There Nationals at the legendary U.S. 30 Dragstrip is the sixth of nine races in the 2021 - 2022 season.

Baldwin pulled out early on final round opponent TJ Zizzo and then fought off a late hour charge from the defending series champion and second place in points. She holds a 138 point lead over Zizzo, while four drivers still have a mathematical chance of winning the title.

A 218 point lead is needed to clinch following next week's Grandnational in Montreal, Quebec.
