When Jerry Espeseth was going to miss this weekend's Bakersfield March Meet in FaMoso, Ca., there was only one logical choice to fill the opening.

No one knows the inside and out of the Atlas Camaro AA/FC than its previous owner Jason Rupert.

At first, Rupert declined the offer until he learned it was more of a command than an offer.

As families and friends gather this weekend to celebrate the holiday weekend, a friend lent a helping hand to another to get their message out to the public. Josh Hart Fearless Racing put a ‘Share Your Spare’ sticker on his Top Fuel Dragster last weekend.

Hart had the decal on his 11,000 horsepower Burnyzz's Speed Shop and TechNet Professional Automotive Service dragster at the Mopar Express Lane NHRA SpringNationals presented by Pennzoil at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas. The rookie driver also donated a portion of his proceeds for the weekend to the Justin Terrell family.

For the third year in a row the Texas Motorplex, home of the historic Texas NHRA FallNationals, held October 2-10, is teaming up again with the Chris Kyle Frog Foundation to offer military and first responders free tickets to the annual NHRA national event. The “Buy a Ticket, Give a Ticket to a Military or First Responder” campaign will also once again be supported by three-time NHRA Top Fuel World Champion and long-time Chris Kyle Frog Foundation supporter Steve Torrence.
 
“We are so proud to continue to support this promotion to honor our military and first responders,” said Torrence. “The past two years we have seen so many people at the races and it wouldn’t be possible without the ‘Buy a Ticket, Give a Ticket’ program. Everyone at Capco Contractors is behind this program and we think this is a great way for all NHRA fans to show their appreciation to our military and first responders.”

 
Small-tire racing star Daniel Pharris went to the provisional No. 1 spot in Penske/PRS Pro Boost presented by WS Construction during a proactive Thursday qualifying session to kick off the Professional Drag Racers Association (PDRA) DeCerbo Construction American Doorslammer Challenge presented by Callies. Driving the GALOT Motorsports ’69 Camaro, Pharris covered the Summit Motorsports Park eighth-mile in 3.649 seconds at 207.05 mph. 
 
With rain in the forecast for Friday and Saturday, PDRA and track officials decided to run the first qualifying session on Thursday evening. 

Just a few weeks after a memorable first impression at Beech Bend Raceway Park, the Professional Drag Racers Association (PDRA) heads to another new track, Summit Motorsports Park, this week for the DeCerbo Construction American Doorslammer Challenge presented by Callies Performance. The Norwalk, Ohio, facility is the third stop on the all-eighth-mile series’ eight-race 2021 schedule.
 
“Summit Motorsports Park is one of the nicest racetracks in the country, so I speak for the whole organization when I say we’re excited for this weekend,” said Tyler Crossnoe, race director, PDRA. “Unfortunately we weren’t able to make our planned stop here in 2020, so we’re really glad we could work with the Bader family to bring the series to Norwalk for the first time this season. We have a lot of racers and fans in the Midwest, and we can’t wait to see them all at the American Doorslammer Challenge.”

Imagine if there was a race -- but not enough competitors for the race to occur.

That, in a nutshell, is what happened with Top Fuel Harley at last weekend’s NHRA Mopar Xpress Lane SpringNationals in Baytown, Texas.

Only six competitors showed up, and by the time rain washed out all but the final pair of Top Fuel dragsters in the opening round Sunday morning, the Harley contingent of half a dozen teams were preparing to hit the road. The remainder of the classes completed the event Monday.

Leah Pruett turns 33 years old today, and while birthdays are always a momentous occasion, this particular year is extra special for Pruett as it marks the 25th anniversary – to the day – that her NHRA career began.
 
Pruett, a native of Redlands in Southern California, grew up around racing and her journey to becoming a bonafide championship-contender in the NHRA’s premier Top Fuel category started when she officially joined the NHRA’s Jr. Dragster youth racing program on her eighth birthday.

NASCAR’s Wood Brothers team may be the only racing operation that has bled Ford blue longer than the Tasca family of Rhode Island.

Those long-time ties certainly didn’t hurt when Bob Tasca III made repeated pitches to upper management to resume sponsorship in drag racing after it pulled out in 2014. And Tasca essentially put everything on the line when he made his bid for Ford backing: We’ll run up front — or else.

Tasca’s promotional prowess looks especially prescient since Jim Farley was elevated to Ford Motor Company’s CEO and president in October 2020. The latter’s promotion from within meant that racing had a major supporter in the highest place in the company, and Tasca was able to make the most of his family ties.

Funny Car racer Bobby Bode surprised even himself last October 24, when he debuted here as an Arizona State University freshman majoring in business administration.

At the time, so many aspects of his life were new experiences: late-night math exams via computer, for example, not to mention trying to juggle his need to study and his desire to concentrate on his racing career.

“It’s pretty hard,” he said of trying to hit the books after hitting the throttle of an 11,000-horsepower Funny Car. (Take that, campus cruisers at Tempe!)

Dave Stine grew up in a hot rodding family. His father, John, and mother Joyce were both car people who enjoyed their hot rods, passing on that love to their offspring. Dave and his brother Dean both raced motorcycles for a while before Dave became infatuated with four wheels, finally ending up with a dragster to run in NHRA’s Super Comp class.

In the meantime, growing up with sort of the same foundation, Kara Stricker began with Jr. Dragsters, working with her father Jeff, who is a noted racer himself. Finally, Kara found herself behind the wheel of a Top Dragster and a separate Super Comp car, earning a number of Wallys along the way including a divisional championship.
