LIFE ON THE ROAD: SOME OF THE GREATEST DRAG RACING WAR STORIES, PT. 2

There are multiple types of stories in drag racing. Those you can tell, and those you shouldn’t. Then there are those you tell to win a trophy.

For almost a decade, some of drag racing’s greatest storytellers came together for a good old-fashioned yarn-spinning competition where the first liar almost always took the prize. The scary part about it was that the stories were accurate with some embellishments.

Over the next couple of weeks, we plan to bring you the best of these stories, some in word and some in video. - Editor

KYLE KORETSKY ENJOYING FORAY INTO FACTORY X DIVISION

Yes, that was "Kid Chaos" Kyle Koretsky racing at the U.S. Nationals earlier this month.

Koretsky was competing in the NHRA's new Factory X division, an advanced version of the Factory Stock Showdown.

Koretsky, was driving Rob Smith’s COPO Camaro, and he was upended by eventual race winner Aaron Stanfield in the first round.

Stanfield clocked a 7.186-second time at 191.43 mph to defeat Koretsky who came across the finish line at 7.388 seconds at 185.61 mph.

ERIC LATINO ENJOYING HIS VENTURE INTO PRO STOCK

No one can say Eric Latino doesn’t like to try something new.

The accomplished Pro Mod racer changed his racing path by switching to Pro Stock last year and it was a full-fledge investment he made to become a key member of KB Titan Racing.

“Out of the Pro Mod compared to the Pro Stock, Pro Mod's really fun to drive. The difference is these (Pro Stock cars) things are pretty cool,” Latino said. “Just the consistency, clutching this thing, shift it. You've got to shift this thing on the money. You hit the limiter you shave off two to three hundredths. It's really all about precision driving. So, we're doing good. It took me a long time, man. I did six, seven races last year and it wasn't until (Richmond) Virginia (this season) where I got a handle on the car, and we qualified No. 2.

NHRA FINES FACTORY X, FACTORY STOCK SHOWDOWN RACERS; NEITHER PARTY WILLING TO TALK

Those close to the situation will say the intent was crystal clear, even if the NHRA will not comment on the record. The NHRA opted to decline comment on the racers who were fined and docked points, and another experienced both and was disqualified from the 70th annual NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis. The NHRA said it is its policy to not comment on an ongoing investigation.

The NHRA filed an action against Greg and Aaron Stanfield for violating the Factory X supercharger pulley rules discovered during a routine technical inspection at the Toyota NHRA US Nationals. Both Stanfields were required to correct the issue, then were docked 100 championship points and were fined $2500.

PRO ANNOUNCES SECOND ANNUAL SUPERSTAR SHOOTOUT RETURNING TO BRADENTON

LYLE BARNETT WALKS AWAY FROM HORRIFIC FIRE BECAUSE OF 2015 NEAR-FATAL EXPERIENCE

Pro Modified icon Lyle Barnett had seen this movie before.

Barnett was at a test session hosted by Alabama International Dragway in Steele, Alabama, which later became an Outlaw Pro Modified event. He was in a completely legal NHRA Pro Modified competition, and in some ways, he was at a disadvantage. But Barnett, a drag racer with a reputation for beating the odds, still liked his odds running his combination in preparation for the NHRA U.S. Nationals.

Barnett was on a good run when, without warning, the engine and car erupted in flames. Knowing his history, instead of panicking, Barnett relied on far superior safety equipment than he had in 2015. He brought the car to a safe stop and exited.

TITLE BY TITLE, ERICA ENDERS MOVING CLOSER TO GLIDDEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP MARK

If Erica Enders can find her way to world championship No. 7 – she won her first six in 2014-15, 2019-20, and 2022-23 – she would trail only the late Bob Glidden for most Pro Stock titles. Glidden won 10 in 1974-75, 1978-80, and 1985-89.

“It definitely would mean a lot to me,” Enders said. “I try not to get ahead of myself, by any means, and I'm so very proud of what we've accomplished up to this point. But I believe, and I know a lot of other people believe, that we're nowhere near being done yet. I'm excited about what's to come. We certainly haven't had the season leading up to this point that we had hoped for, but I did, however, get to achieve that one goal of winning the Gatornationals, which had eluded us for 21 seasons. That was a high point of our season, and now that we get into the thick of things with Indy being points and a half and then heading into the Countdown … it's usually the time that we shine.
