2020 NHRA WINTERNATIONALS - EVENT RESULTS
SUNDAY - KALITTA, BECKMAN AND COUGHLIN START THE SEASON WITH WINS AT THE 60TH ANNUAL LUCAS OIL NHRA WINTERNATIONALS
For the third straight time, Doug Kalitta took home a national event win at the 60th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com. Sunday’s win marks Kalitta’s 48th career win, placing him fifth in wins on the all-time Top Fuel list.
Jack Beckman (Funny Car) and Jeg Coughlin (Pro Stock) also took home event wins in their respective categories, marking the first time in NHRA history that the winners from the Auto Club Finals also took home wins at the Winternationals.
Top Fuel veteran Kalitta went 3.698-seconds at 330.23 mph in his Mac Tools dragster to defeat JFR’s Austin Prock in the final round at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. Kalitta has won four of the last five races at the track and has advanced to five final rounds in a row at the Winternationals. Kalitta defeated Brandon Welch, Justin Ashley and former world champion Brittany Force to advance to the finals on Sunday.
“It’s been an interesting day for sure. A lot of close racing,” said Kalitta. “We have people up there trying to tear the tree down on you so you’re a little nervous about all that. It worked out well though. I’m just really proud of my guys. They busted their tails today. We tore up a little bit of parts here, but it was all good. The 60th is pretty special. Connie was here at the first one. I couldn’t be happier for him and the family and the legacy that’s been created out here. I’m just glad this is one of our better tracks.”
In Funny Car, Beckman picked up a win after going 3.837-seconds at 333.33 in his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat. Beckman defeated Steven Densham, Ron Capps and Alexis DeJoria to advance to the final round, where he took the win over Funny Car legend John Force. Beckman captured his first ever career win at the Winternationals in 1998 in Super Comp. Sunday’s win marks Beckman’s 31st career Funny Car win, tying Del Worsham for eighth all time in class history.
“To beat John Force in the final, it's a pretty cool weekend,” said Beckman. “It’s my home track. I’ve probably spent more time down there on the starting line than anybody else. I feel comfortable here. There were a lot of friends and family out here today. This a perfect storm. I had never won a nitro title at Pomona up until November last year and now I got two in a row. It’s beyond magical. You don’t know if your last win is your last win. I’m going to go out on a limb and say this isn’t our last win. The Infinite Hero team has been amazing. We were top two every run in qualifying, except for the first round. Our car was just absolutely amazing. As a driver, you don’t want to limp your way into the winner’s circle. It was awesome for us.”
Coughlin kicked off his “Breaking Barriers 2020” retirement tour with a bang, taking home the event win with a 6.522-second pass at 210.80. Earlier in the weekend, Coughlin announced that he would be stepping down from professional Pro Stock racing at the conclusion of the 2020 season. He beat out Jason Line for the event win, who also announced that 2020 would be his final professional season. Coughlin defeated Joey Grose, Chris McGaha and Kenny Delco to advance to the final round at the 2020 Winternationals. Sunday’s win broke Coughlin’s 20 year win drought at the race, bringing him his 64th career Pro Stock win, placing him fourth on the all-time list.
“It was quite a day. It started on Friday honestly, we’ll just call it quite a weekend,” said Coughlin. “Ricky Jones and Richard Freeman, the whole Elite team did a fantastic job over the winter. Today’s race was outstanding. I can’t recall a time in my 20 plus year career in Pro Stock that I was low for each and every one of the sessions and won the race. That’s quite a testament to the team. Hopefully it’s something we can hold on to for a little bit. It looks like we have a bit of a performance advantage here at Pomona and we were able to capitalize on it.”
The Mello Yello Drag Racing Series continues on Feb. 21-23 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals at Wild Horse Pass.
SATURDAY - B. FORCE, HAGAN AND COUGHLIN CLINCH NO. 1 QUALIFIERS TO KICK OFF THE SEASON OPENER
Five-time Pro Stock world champion Jeg Coughlin had a monumental day at the 60th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com. Coughlin kicked off the day by announcing that the 2020 season will be his last season as a professional Pro Stock driver. He followed up the announcement by claiming the No. 1 qualifying spot.
Matt Hagan (Funny Car) and Brittany Force (Top Fuel) also clinched No. 1 qualifier positions in their respective categories in the first of 24 races during the 2020 NHRA Mello Yellow Drag Racing Series season.
Coughlin is looking to go out with a bang after announcing that he will be retiring from full-time Pro Stock racing at the conclusion of the 2020 season. He is off to a good start by seeding himself at the top with a run of 6.525-seconds at 210.77 mph. Looking to compete for his sixth Pro Stock world title, this marks Coughlin’s 33rd career No. 1 qualifier. He will face Joey Grose in the opening round of eliminations.
“I announced this is going to be my final full professional season in Pro Stock," said Coughlin. "I let the clutch out for the first time in 1997 in Dallas and I’ve let the clutch out every year since. I’ve just had a magnificent run.
"My family has been unbelievable. We had a lot going for us, but we did the most with it without a doubt. I’m definitely not hanging up the helmet, but will you see me full time in Pro Stock again? It’s not very likely. I love drag racing. I’m very competitive as a person and as a racer. There is a lot of good racing left in my life. I’m looking forward to that and turning that chapter. I’ve made thousands and thousands of runs and wouldn’t change it one bit. It’s going to be a fun year and so far it’s started out extremely well.”
Deric Kramer follows close behind in the second spot with a 6.549 at 210.08 mph. Teammate Erica Enders is sitting in the third spot with a 6.552 at 210.80 mph.
In the Funny Car ranks, Hagan continued his 2019 momentum by clinching the No. 1 qualifier spot with a 3.841-second pass at 333.25 mph in his MOPAR Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Car. He picked up his 37th career No. 1 qualifier and 5th at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. Hagan will face off against Alex Miladinovich in the first round of eliminations.
“This Funny Car is flying out there," said Hagan. "I was tickled to hang on to it. When they put a hot rod underneath you like that, it’s always fun. I was a little mad at myself on that run. I was probably wheeling on the steering wheel a bit much. As a guy that’s been out here 13 years, you just know when you kinda got to let them float. My guys are doing an amazing job. Robert (Hight) took it back and we took it right back from him again. How can you complain about that? Going into race day, my lights have been great. The car is running great. My guys are doing a phenomenal job and we came off a really strong season last year.”
Jack Beckman sits in the second position after a run of 3.856-seconds at 328.86 mph. Robert Hight will start his Sunday from the third position after a 3.862 at 331.45.
Top Fuel driver Force picked up her 19th career No. 1 qualifier with a run of 3.657-seconds at 334.32 mph. This marks only her second No. 1 qualifying position at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. Force will have a bye during the first round of eliminations, but will face off against the winner of the Clay Millican and Terry McMillen showdown for the second round.
“That was an incredible pass for this team," Force said. "It’s the first race of the season and I’m excited to be out here in Pomona. I’m excited to be out here with the same team. We came out this weekend and ran consistent all weekend long. We were able to push on that last run. It was pretty incredible and I’m ready to go into race day tomorrow. Your confidence going into the start of the season is much higher. Last season we came out strong from the beginning. We hung on to that number one spot and I just found out Austin (Prock) was number two. Pretty exciting. JFR is off to a good start this season.”
Force’s teammate Austin Prock is starting out the season strong by clinching the second spot with a 3.680 at 330.72 mph. Following close behind in third will be Leah Pruett after a run of 3.687-seconds at 328.06 mph.
Due to impending weather, eliminations have been move up to 10:00 a.m. PT on Sunday.

FRIDAY - LANGDON, HAGAN AND COUGHLIN SECURE PROVISIONAL NO. 1 SPOTS AT 2020 SEASON OPENER
Shawn Langdon kicked off the 2020 season opener in style, grabbing the Top Fuel provisional No. 1 qualifier spot on Friday at the 60th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com after making the switch from Funny Car back to Top Fuel dragster.
Matt Hagan (Funny Car) and Jeg Coughlin Jr. (Pro Stock) also claimed provisional No. 1 qualifiers in their respective categories at the first of 24 races on the 2020 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.
Langdon knocked off Brittany Force during Q2 to claim the quickest run with a pass of 3.699-seconds at 322.42 mph in his DHL Toyota Top Fuel Dragster to kick off the season. Langdon is looking to start off the season strong after a two year hiatus in the Top Fuel class to run Funny Car. Langdon is chasing his third No. 1 qualifier at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, and 19th of his career.
“There are tracks you go to and it seems like everything just clicks. I could stage this thing in reverse and it seems like it just works out. There are tracks you go to and it feels like you fall out of bed awkwardly. Pomona is one of those tracks I feel like I’ve had good success at. I’m just excited about today. It’s a good start,” said Langdon. “Every run we’re making small little changes trying to get me more comfortable. It’s a big change going back from a Funny Car to a dragster. We feel confident right now. For Connie (Kalitta, owner and crew chief), I know he’s excited.”
Brittany Force follows close behind in second with a 3.706 at 329.10 mph, which Leah Pruett seeded in third after a 3.715 second pass at 324.75 mph.
Hagan is looking to continue the momentum from 2019, posting a 3.867 at 331.20 to grab the provisional No. 1 qualifying spot for Funny Car in his MOPAR/Pennzoil/Sandvik Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat. If it holds, Hagan will grab his 37th career No. 1 qualifier and fifth at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.
Jack Beckman is currently seeded second with a 3.868-second pass at 326.95 mph, while defending Funny Car champion Robert Hight trails close behind in third with a 3.885 at 330.31 mph.
Pro Stock’s Jeg Coughlin Jr. sits in the provisional No. 1 qualifier spot with a 6.530 at 210.73 mph pass. If the position holds, this will be Coughlin's 33rd career No. 1 qualifier. Close behind him in second place is Coughlin's Elite Motorsports teammate and three-time Pro Stock world champion Erica Enders, who ran a 6.552 at 210.70mph.
