DIXON’S A DRAGSTER DRIVER, BUT FAN OF DOORSLAMMERS

With that in mind, Dixon went to the ADRL Hardee’s Georgia Drags in Valdosta, Ga., as a guest of Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Thani, the owner of Al-Anabi Racing, late last month. Sheikh Khalid was making his ADRL driving debut and is racing in the ADRL’s Pro Extreme division this season.

“It was a great time,” said Dixon, who is in his second season piloting the Al-Anabi Racing Top Fuel dragster and is leading the point standings. “I had a lot of fun. I also thought he (Sheikh Khalid) did very well.”

Sheikh Khalid was quite impressive, clocking a world record 3.637-second elapsed time in qualifying. Sheikh Khalid’s weekend ended prematurely, when he left early against John Stanley, lighting the red light,  in the first round of eliminations.

Dixon did enjoy watching the ADRL event, but stopped short of committing to driving in the doorslammer series himself. Dixon has been racing in the Top Fuel ranks since 1994 and he won two world championships - 2002 and 2003.

“To be honest with you it would be very difficult to do because of the way my schedule is,” said Dixon, who does do some bracket racing from time to time. “Earlier this year, I did contact Frank Hawley about making a few laps in a Pro Mod car because they offer that at his driving school. I think the Pro Mod cars, blowers and nitrous are great cars, but I’m a long way from racing one. The quickest car I have with doors right now is a ’66 Nova and that’s a street car. It only goes 10-seconds (in a quarter-mile), not three seconds in an eighth-mile like the Pro Mod cars.”

Dixon, however, wouldn’t rule out the Sheikh Khalid, trying his hand as a Top Fuel driver.

“I think he owns two bad-ass nitro cars right now,” Dixon said. “There’s my dragster and the Funny Car Del (Worsham) drives. If he wants to make runs in a Top Fuel car that would be up to him. From what I’ve seen (as a driver), he’s very capable of handling one of those cars. I work for him (Sheikh Khalid), so he doesn’t need my permission to drive one of those (Top Fuel) cars. I definitely would offer him advice if he asked.”

Dixon also wasn’t sure when he would attend another ADRL race.

“We’re getting ready to run three races pretty much in a row here, and then we have four in a row,” Dixon said. “It’s going to be hard to just keep my head above water with the schedule I have. I would like to go to another ADRL race, but I will just have to look at the schedule.”

Considering his own time constraints and commitments, Dixon did offer a solution to get his ADRL fix.

“Maybe if the ADRL ran races on Mondays and Tuesdays, I would have a better shot at it,” Dixon said.

Next up for Dixon is the 30th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals May 14-16. Dixon won at Atlanta in 1996, 2002 and 2003.

“I really like racing there and I’ve won at that track quite a few times,” Dixon said. “I’m really looking forward to getting back there and seeing what we can do.”
