NO DRAGSTER FOR SCELZI

When Gary Scelzi left Top Fuel at the end of the 2001 season, he adamantly stated that he was done with the class.
Seven years later he doesn’t have an itch to return.

“I have no intentions to drive a Top Fuel dragster ever again,” Scelzi told CompetitionPlus.com in an exclusive interview recently.

Scelzi’s name has popped up in rumor circles as a potential driver for former tuner Alan Johnson’s Al-Anabi/Alan Johnson Racing dragster. He’s honored that his name would pop up, but Scelzi quickly points out that he’s not even in the running.

If the driving gig were remotely factual, Scelzi added, he would pursue driving the Funny Car and keep away from the dragster. When the four-time world champion made the switch to Funny Car, he did so for safety reasons and in the belief the floppers were safer than dragsters by a large margin.

“I can’t really say that anymore because these Funny Cars haven’t been too stellar lately in the safety department,” Scelzi admitted.

Besides, Scelzi admits driving a Funny Car provides the kinds of physical challenges he prefers.

“I enjoy the Funny Cars and I take it as a challenge every time you hit the gas,” Scelzi said. “You never know what it’s going to do and I enjoy racing with John Force, Del Worsham and Ron Capps. I just like these guys that I race against. Nothing against the Top Fuel guys but it’s just more exciting, when it smokes the tires, turns sideways, and just yanks the front end. They’re just nasty and I like that.”
