In the points chase, this race is crucial, as it is the last race before the mid-season points adjustment kicks in.

In the NMRA chases, only one round of racing separates Don Burton and John Urist in ProCharger Super Street Outlaw, and in ACT Factory Stock a mere 45 points separate the two frontrunners. The closest chase of all is in Eibach Springs Pure Street where the top two Steve Gifford and Mark Anderson are separated by a scant 10 points, with Ryan Hecox only 30 points further back.

The NMCA classes have similarly tight racing, with Jim Blair only holding a one-round lead on Mike Yedgarian in Mickey Thompson Super Street 10.5, and only 10 points separate the Vortech Xtreme Street leader Bill Trovato from Chris Singleton.

In addition to racing for individual glory, this year the Super Bowl Shootout will be a series-versus-series team effort, with the coveted Nitto Tire Diamond Tree rings going to all the class winners of the one series that takes home more shootout wins. The Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing will have some of the best racing of the season all crammed into one spectacular weekend.
