Dixon, in the Al-Anabi dragster, was headed to an easy victory over Mike Strasburg until he struck the tires around the 300 foot mark. Strasburg's 3.949 second, 275.96 mph run was the second slowest of all the first round winners. Massey, in the U.S. Smokeless dragster, struck his tires at almost the exact same spot during his run against Joe Hartley, who posted the slowest run of the session – 4.175 second, 249.90 mph.

At the other end of the spectrum, J.R. Todd made a solid pass, 3.914 seconds, 305.70 mph while his opponent Steve Chrisman went up in smoke, coasting to a 9.033 elapsed time. In his second round matchup against Tony Schumacher, Todd clocked another solid run in the BACA Racing dragster, a 3.995 to Schumacher's 4.169. Todd never trailed, beating The Sarge off the line .070 to .091.

Todd exited his dragster saying, “We beat the champ. I even left on the machine!”
