American Top Fuel racer Tommy Johnson Jr. needed only one round to clinch 2010 – 2011 FIA series championship. Now he might not finish the season and inevitably lose his championship points due to an infraction the FIA is labeling as an “anti-doping” offense.

Johnson, who drives the Andersen racing Top fuel dragster, was suspended when a legally-prescribed medication was found in a random drug test. The unnamed medication is legal in NHRA competition but is not on the FIA's prescribed list.

"Tommy received the results of the test two weeks after the Nitro Nationals and his licence was suspended," team owner Karsten Andersen told Eurodragster.com. "It's a failure in procedure but we didn't know the procedure. You have to fill in a form thirty days before competition and Tommy only got his FIA licence two weeks before the FIA Main Event. The FIA Commission have spoken to FIA but it's out of their hands - FIA have anti-doping legislation and won't change it even though that medication is legal in NHRA. There is an appeal hearing at the end of August, but Hockenheim would have been our last race this season anyway because our budget only stretched as far as this event."

We'll have more on this story as it develops.
