Tulsa Raceway Park in Tulsa, Oklahoma is going out of business at the end of the month.

The iconic drag strip, operated by Dan Guterman since 2003, cited the economic climate as the reason for closing the historic facility.

“When Tulsa International Raceway was purchased in 2003, the decision was made to tear down and replace the existing facility with the hopes of restoring the drag strip to its glory days,” said Guterman in a prepared statement. “With the help of many hard working employees and loyal racers and fans, we grew year after year. Unfortunately, the economy over the last three years has taken its toll.”

The facility first opened in 1965 and was best known for its 1972 PRA National Challenge event promoted and staged opposite of the NHRA U.S. Nationals.

Multiple sources have indicated the track has been purchased by a nearby rock quarry and will become part of their expansion program.

Full-time employees of the track have been notified of the closing and the last event is scheduled for October 22.
