J.R. TODD AND FUNNY CAR RACING

J.R. Todd’s name has surfaced in connection with a future Funny Car ride but there’s one problem – no one has asked him if he wanted to.

“A couple of the top seats in the class have opened up,” Todd said. “They have contacted me about it. If someone was to, it would be worth looking into. I don’t know. I’d consider it.”

Todd’s name has surfaced as a possible addition to the John Force team and although Force praised the talented Top Fuel driver, he pointed out that Todd would be a worthy candidate. His name has also floated in certain circles as a potential Gary Scelzi successor.

Todd’s name has surfaced as a possible addition to the John Force team and although Force praised the talented Top Fuel driver, he pointed out that Todd would be a worthy candidate. His name has also floated in certain circles as a potential Gary Scelzi successor.

Todd admitted that his father Mario has put out feelers acknowledging that his son would be open to the change of venue.

“He’s always looking out for my best interests,” Todd said. “Whatever he thinks is best for me. He just always wants to see me do well. He’s always beaten down doors looking for sponsors. I have a good ride where I am at and I’m happy.”

When asked about his contract with team owner Dexter Tuttle, Todd pointed out, “We have an agreement for me to drive for the whole season and I fully intend to honor that agreement.”

ESPN announcer Paul Page’s inquiry to Force only served to open the floodgates for aspiring Top Fuel drivers to call the shop asking about the ride.

“I’m honored that I would be considered for the ride,” said Todd. “We’ll just see what happens.”

Todd’s experience in a Funny Car is limited to a single 400-foot squirt in Bob Gilbertson’s flopper during an Indy test session.

“It’s a totally different animal than anything I have driven before,” Todd, a past Junior Dragster and Super Comp racer said. “One you stand on the gas, you are immediately sawing at the wheel. You can’t do that in a dragster.

“It’s a challenging ride and one I could get up for.”

Loyalty is what keeps him with the Tuttle team. For him, this ride was his big break.

“I wouldn’t up and leave this team like everyone thinks I would,” Todd said. “I am happy where I am. We have a good competitive team and for what little we have, we are giving the big teams fits. We are gunning for the championship.”
