IHRA PREPARES FOR RECORD-SETTING TULSA

soonernats07.jpgThe finishing touches on Tulsa Raceway Park are currently being completed as the inaugural Sooner Nationals presented by Wolverine and Academy Sports + Outdoors will put the Oklahoma drag strip at the center of the Nitro Jam universe May 25-27.

The event, the third on the 2007 Nitro Jam schedule, will bring IHRA’s brand of drag racing to an already booming straight-track market. The Live Nation-Motorsports Thunder Jam, held annually at Tulsa Raceway Park, historically draws among the largest group of spectators on the series schedule. With significant facility improvements in place IHRA officials do not expect the Nitro Jam event to be any different.

“The Thunder Jam has always been unbelievable,” IHRA president Aaron Polburn said. “Tulsa, as a city, loves its racing and we look forward to putting on an incredible show May 25-27. Jim Weinert, our director of field operations, and his crew are currently making the final adjustments to the facility and we are on schedule for everything to be in place. The weather is supposed to be beautiful and we’re ready to put on a great show.”

The Nitro classes are expected to be extremely competitive as a strong, deep field has already pre-registered for the Sooner Nationals. Fourteen Torco Racing Fuels Pro Nitro Top Fuel drivers have already registered for the Tulsa race including Bobby Lagana Jr., T.J. Zizzo, Bruce Litton, Doug Foley and Luigi Novelli. Chris “The Golden Greek” Karamesines will also be on hand along with Mike Strasburg, who is making his Top Fuel debut.

The Torco Racing Fuels Pro Nitro Funny Car class is also expected to be extremely competitive with drivers like defending world champion Dale Creasy Jr., Jack Wyatt, Bob Gilbertson and newcomer Jon Capps each vying to be the first-ever Nitro Funny Car Ironman winner in Tulsa.

“The Nitro classes are going to be incredible,” Polburn said. “Never in IHRA history has there been stronger Nitro classes, top to bottom. There will be a lot of candle-lit side-by-side racing at this event.”
