VANDERGRIFF PONDERS FUTURE FOR BVR
Bob Vandergriff Jr. chuckles and shakes his head when race fans ask him for an autograph.
"I still can’t quite figure out why they would want that but it’s cool," said Vandergriff as he interacts with the race fans. "I’ve never been an autograph collector like with golfers or football players, or that stuff. It’s great for the fans for them to want that and collect all that stuff. I’m more than willing to do it."
Vandergriff has prided himself as the biggest small team owner with a two-car team, which at one time or another, has fielded three cars at once. Two races ago, the resourceful Vandergriff put two cars in the semis during the NHRA Mopar Mile High Nationals, an event broadcast on live television.
"It was a good performance for our team," said Vandergriff. "We haven’t quite had the year we expected so we made some changes with the race car and it seemed to help on the last couple of races. Having Larry’s car out just from an information standpoint helps both teams."
The Denver performance didn't come as a surprise to Vandergriff.
"We were actually a little disappointed because it was set up for both of us to go to the finals, and we had a chance at it," Vandergriff explained. "That would have been awesome to have two BVR cars in the finals, but we saw when we were on the ladder after qualifying third and fourth and we knew that we had cars that were capable of going that far so it. Wasn’t surprising as much as it was disappointing for us not to be able to pull off finals."
Vandergriff has two solid teams, one full-time and the other driven by Larry Dixon is part time. At one time, Vandergriff has admitted he wanted a stable of Top Fuel dragsters; a goal he's unsure he wants today.
"I’m not so sure I want any part of that anymore," admitted Vandergriff. "We’re evaluating what we’re going to do right now. Had some meetings with C&J while we were on vacation recently. Just trying to figure out a game plan as far as what I want to do, what they want to do, what my interest level is in the future and take the next couple of weeks and make some decisions."
Vandergriff isn't shying away from comments over the last few seasons he's ready to vacate the driver's seat. His interest level isn't where it should be.
"Just barely above zero," said Vandergriff. "I’m looking forward to the end of the year. Spent enough time, I’m ready to get out of the car. Let's just put it that way. We’ll see what that entails after the season’s over with."
Currently there's no prospects for replacement, nor a definite plan to vacate the seat.
"Well we haven’t decided what we’re going to do, whether we’re going to run one car, two cars, no cars," said Vandergriff. "Just need to put some thought into where we’re going to be the next couple of weeks and we’ll make some decisions on what we’re going to do."
