11TH HOUR BID FOR STEVENS?
Here’s a point that NHRA
Pro Stock racer Richie Stevens wants to make. Don’t count me out for returning
in 2008.
Stevens isn’t the only one
saying that, either. Reportedly an 11th hour bid to bring back
longtime associate backer Valspar is in the works. That campaign is being
spearheaded by Valspar team member Randy Tinsley.
“We’ve met with them through Randy and they didn’t shoot us down, in fact they asked to see a proposal,” Stevens said. “They want to see some artwork. We’re trying. I’m hoping a call will come for Christmas.”

Stevens was essentially
left without a ride in 2008 when major sponsor Mopar cut their budget and opted
to cease the Pro Stock operation at Don Schumacher Racing. Valspar had
announced a change of marketing direction earlier in 2007.
Stevens stands on the
sidelines presently while Tinsley and team owner Don Schumacher work at a
feverish pace to keep him behind the wheel for the Dodge Stratus Pro Stocker.
“I’m keeping my fingers
crossed because there isn’t a whole lot out there in terms of driving jobs,”
Stevens said. “For the past three years, I’ve had people come up and ask to
drive their cars. Now that I haven’t got a major sponsor behind me, no one
answers their phones now.”
Stevens has been
associated with the Valspar Paints brand since 1999.
