ORANGEBURG TEST UPDATE

Another Orangeburg, South Carolina Chamber of Commerce day closed out the testing at Orangeburg Dragway’s revamped eighth-mile facility.

In Saturday’s first session, Herman Sheppard ran a 4.31 elapsed time at 171 miles per hour.

IHRA nitrous frontrunner Burton Auxier cranked out a 1.00 sixty-foot time then before aborting the run from tire shake. Auxier’s quick early incremental time and the subsequent end result established the standard for the Saturday session -- a few modest passes and lots of tire shake around the 200-foot mark.

Auxier would later record a 4.04 elapsed time at 189.70 miles per hour.

Robert Johansson, making his way from Sweden, provided a bit of excitement when he shifted into fourth gear and the third stage of nitrous kicked in. The European got loose as he crossed the finish line and scraped the right side wall.  Johansson still managed a 4.15 elapsed time. The damage was minimal and he was able to make more passes.

Annette Summer, breaking in a new set up for her turbocharged Corvette, had a great launch but ran into problems carding only a 4.27 elapsed time at only 113 miles per hour.

Bubba Stanton ran a 3.92 coupled with a slowing 172.69 trap speed, appearing to pedal during the course of the run. His run paced the test session.

Mike Castellana was also in attendance with his new classic Pontiac Firebird. After fighting the right lane, the former IHRA world champion switched over to the left and blasted out a 3.98, 188 combination.

Other notable runs included Sonny Tindal (4.10, 177), Kerry Crosby (4.15, 177), Troy Jordan (4.19, 175) and Sheppard (4.21, 184).

Kenny Neese, Josh Chester along with Robbie Keziah arrived and made passes during the Saturday session.

Nearly 100 local sportsman teams also made use of the test session and the accompanying beautiful weather encouraged hundreds of spectators to make the season opener a very successful event. Owner Buddy Boozer and the track crew provided a wonderful track and hospitality to all who attended.
