EUROPEAN CHAMPION HOPING TO ROPE VICTORY IN HOUSTON

Reigning FIA Top Fuel champion Urs Erbacher will make the trek from his native Switzerland to Houston Raceway Park this weekend to challenge for the title of the 21st annual O'Reilly Spring NHRA Nationals. He's also got big plans to participate in a local rodeo competition while he's in the Lone Star State.

A custom motorcycle builder on the level of Jesse James at West Coast Choppers and the Teutul family at Orange County Choppers, Erbacher is a four-time European drag racing champion who is looking to make his mark in the United States.

"We're excited to come to the legendary state of Texas," Erbacher said. "The 2008 FIA season starts soon at Santa Pod Raceway in England and we want to be up to full speed by the time our circuit begins. It's very important to us to defend our title. urspose.jpgReigning FIA Top Fuel champion Urs Erbacher will make the trek from his native Switzerland to Houston Raceway Park this weekend to challenge for the title of the 21st annual O'Reilly Spring NHRA Nationals. "This will be our fifth NHRA race and we're improving each time. The racing here is incredible. Every team must be taken very seriously. I'm confident this experience has strengthened our crew and our entire operation."

Led by crew chief Wayne Dupuy of Jacksboro, Texas, Erbacher's FatAttack.ch race team will carry title sponsorship from Baytown-based Century Asphalt at this event. Century Asphalt is one of the numerous construction companies of the Angel brothers, who also own and operate Houston Raceway Park.

The entire team will prep for the race with some genuine rodeo action at the fourth annual Darrell Russell Memorial Invitational in Hockley, Texas. Russell was a local drag racer who lost his life in a high speed drag racing accident in St. Louis in 2004. The rodeo is held prior to the Houston race each year in Russell's honor.

"Wayne was Darrell's crew chief so this rodeo is very important to him," Erbacher said. "My guys are from Germany, Italy, and Switzerland so rodeo is new to us but we're going to try to win the top prize for Wayne. Hopefully, the horses and cows are nice to us while we are there."

Erbacher will also meet and greet fans from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at San Jacinto Mall at I-10 and Garth Road in Baytown as part of the second annual Hot Rod Rally, presented by the City of Baytown Chamber of Commerce and Houston Raceway Park. The event is free and will be highlighted by a special demonstration at 7 p.m. when Erbacher will fire-up his 8,000-horsepower dragster. Several drivers and cars will be on hand.

"We look to have a big time in Texas and also win some trophies," Erbacher said. "It is a very exciting weekend ahead for all of us."
