The four cars are owned by Brent Hajec, a Ford enthusiast, Calvert explained, who purchased several of these special edition machines and then farmed out four of them.

“This is really exciting,” Calvert said. “I’ve been a longtime Ford racer. It’s exciting to be involved in a project of this magnitude since I’ve run a Cobra Jet for so many years.”

Calvert plans to field two of the Mustangs out of his camp, the other driven by an unnamed Ford associate, in AA/Stock as well as A/S. Two other cars are currently being prepared in Kansas.

Running a Cobra Jet Mustang is nothing new to Calvert as he campaigns a 1968½ version in Super Stock/G. His record holding entry is an original steel version of the popular icon.

The cars his team will run in Pomona will be considerably different than what he’s accustomed to. Instead of the traditional Detroit horsepower, these high-level stockers will be equipped with the new supercharged 5.4 liter engines with manual transmissions on a 9-inch tire. The cars will compete on a 10.90 index.

Ironically, the Pomona debut comes 41 years after Ford debuted it’s factory-backed Super Stock Cobra Jet effort at the 1968 Winternationals. With names such as Gas Rhonda and Hubert Platt in the mix, it was fellow Ford-backed racer Al Joneic who captured the crown.
