Burgess, along with his brother Stanley and up and coming Atlanta-based musician Bill Gentry have created a new country-rock themed song titled Go Full Throttle.

“When I was younger … about 15 or 16 … I was in a rock and roll band,” Burgess admitted. “Just like drag racing I got away from it. I hadn’t picked up a guitar until about the time the Full Throttle announcement was made.”

Burgess had a tune in mind and started humming potential lyrics while driving through Atlanta. As soon as he reached his destination he wrote the lyrics.

Burgess works with that kind of inspiration. It’s what has made him successful in life.

“After that it was, who could I get to sing this thing?” Burgess said.

Gentry’s in the midst of recording a new CD and Burgess felt the project could give the new artist exposure. Beyond that, Burgess knew Gentry could relate considering he’d attended the NHRA Summit Southern Nationals in Commerce, Ga.

Stan, Burgess added, was very instrumental in putting the vision to music.

“He’s the guy who actually helped me sit down and finish it up,” Burgess said. “He’s probably written about 50 or 60 songs, this was my first.”

Because Burgess had a tune embedded in his mind, at first he had a difficult time explaining his vision to the rest of the musical team.

“I actually picked up the guitar and played the first part of the song,” Burgess said. “From there they made it a lot better.”

Burgess laughed, “A whole lot better.”

What would Burgess like to see happen with his song?

“I would just love to have fun with it,” Burgess admitted. “As long as everybody else enjoys it and it brings more awareness for drag racing -- that would be cool.

“In a perfect world, seeing it end up on ESPN2 would be awesome.”
