NHRA CONFIRMS EARLY ENTRIES FOR POMONA

In a press release issued this afternoon, the NHRA said that its competition department has reported as many as 18 teams in each of the event’s three featured pro categories (Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock) have confirmed their plans for participating in the first of 24 races in the 2009 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.

In Top Fuel, 18 teams have entered to date, featuring the following drivers: six-time champ Tony Schumacher, Brandon Bernstein, two-time champ Larry Dixon, Antron Brown, Doug Kalitta, Cory McClenathan, Morgan Lucas, rookie Spencer Massey, Clay Millican, David Baca, Mike Strasburg, Troy Buff, Joe Hartley, Arley Langlo, Rob Passey, Steve Chrisman, Urs Erbacher and Andy Carter, the FIA European Top Fuel champ. In Funny Car, 18 teams also have entered, including: defending world champ Cruz Pedregon and brother Tony, John Force, Ashley Force Hood, Robert Hight, Mike Neff, Ron Capps, Jack Beckman, Tim Wilkerson, Gary Densham, Jeff Arend, Del Worsham, Bob Tasca, rookie Matt Hagan, Jerry Toliver, Jim Head, Bob Bode and Terry Haddock.

More than 20 Pro Stock cars are registered, including defending world champ Jeg Coughlin, Greg Anderson, Kurt and Warren Johnson, Jason Line, Allen Johnson, Greg Stanfield, Mike Edwards, Jim Yates, V Gaines, Ron Krisher, Johnny Gray, Rickie Jones, Steve Spiess, Larry Morgan and Vinnie Deceglie, among others.

In addition to professional racing, hundreds of racers are expected to compete for victory in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, the sportsman drag racing arm of the NHRA.

Professional qualifying begins on Feb. 5 with one round (2 p.m.), and will be followed by another round of qualifying on Feb. 6 (2 p.m.). The final two rounds of qualifying will be conducted on Feb. 7 (11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.). Final eliminations start at 11 a.m. on Feb. 8.
