CORY MAC: WE HAVE A LEARNING CURVE

Cory McClenathan drove the FRAM Top Fuel dragster to seven passes at the NAPA AUTO PARTS National Time Trials at Firebird Raceway in preparation for the 2009 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series opener in Pomona, Calif., Feb. 5-8. In test mode and working with an all-new team, McClenathan's quickest pass of the two days the Don Schumacher Racing teams tested was a 4.067-second elapsed time at 227.31 mph, good for No. 10 for the weekend.

"We've been in test mode for the last two weeks straight," said McClenathan, "and trying things to better DSR as a whole, with all the cars, Funny Cars included, so it's been about being a team player. And today we kind of backed up and said, OK, let's just get the car to go down the track. "I'll admit we're struggling a little bit but everybody is still new to this. (Crew chiefs) Todd (Okuhara) and Phil (Shuler) are plenty smart and plenty sharp. They'll figure it out and it really doesn't matter what you ran in testing because what matters is what you do in Pomona when you start the season. That's when the points start.

"So, I'm sure we'll take whatever we can out of this and we'll stay and test on Monday, maybe even on Tuesday. We're not done, but we certainly haven't put anything in the record books this weekend. It's one of those things.

"We're on a learning curve and I think the guys are doing a great job with this FRAM Top Fuel dragster. If I can take something away from that, I'll wait, and I'll be happy to make full passes in Pomona."
