MIKE GREEN'S BIG CHALLENGE

Even though he’s experienced many a season opener over the last couple
of decades, Mike Green can hardly wait for the 
opening round of the
2009 Full Throttle Drag Racing Series to arrive next weekend out at
Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, Calif.
“We’re definitely anxious to get started,” said the new crew chief for the U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster and driver Tony “The Sarge” Schumacher. “I say let’s go racing.”
Green is about to embark on his first year tuning Schumacher’s world championship-winning dragster. He replaced Alan Johnson who started his own Top Fuel and Funny Car operation.
“I’m excited about the season ahead,” added the Sacramento, Calif. native. “We’ve got a great driver with Tony and we’ve assembled a talented group of guys to work on the car. If recent test results are any indication, Green and his team should clearly be considered title contenders in ’09.
“I was happy with the way we performed at both test sessions (in West Palm Beach, Fla. and Phoenix),” he offered. “We accomplished everything we wanted to accomplish. I feel we’re race ready.”
The two test weekends also provided valuable time for Schumacher to get to know his new team and vice versa.
“That was important,” said Green. “Everyone got to know Tony a little better and he got to know them better. Everyone adjusted quite well and worked together with ease.”
Green would love to begin the forthcoming season the same way the U.S. Army car did in 2008.
“We’d like to start off the way they did last year – with a win,” he stated. “Don’t forget that I was over in the other lane against them in the finals with the FRAM car (with driver Cory McClenathan). It would be nice to take it a step further this year.”
In addition to the competition side, Green is also looking forward to beginning a relationship with the U.S. Army.
“I’ve been around some high profile sponsors over the years, but none come nearly as big as the U.S. Army,” he said. “They are probably the ultimate sponsor. They’ve been great for Don Schumacher Racing and great for the sport.
“As I know Tony has been over the years, I will be proud to represent them. We’re going to try our hardest to keep delivering championships to the Soldiers.”
