DRIVERS REACT TO CHAMPIONSHIP PREDICTIONS

Spencer Massey (Top Fuel) and Del Worsham (Funny Car), along with fellow NHRA Full Throttle racers Allen Johnson (Pro massey_2.jpgStock) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) are the CompetitionPlus.com picks to win their respective championships in 2009.

To say both Massey and Worsham were surprised would be an understatement.

Massey, who was given advance notice on Tuesday evening, was already in Pomona preparing for his national event debut as driver for Don “Snake” Prudhomme.

To say both Massey and Worsham were surprised would be an understatement.

Massey, who was given advance notice on Tuesday evening, was already in Pomona preparing for his national event debut as driver for Don “Snake” Prudhomme.

“That’s awesome,” Massey said. “I think I can handle that pressure but it sure is a goal I had intended to shoot for from the day I was hired here. I know what it takes to pull off such a feat, and now it’s up to me to give it my best in trying to make it happen.”

Massey captured the IHRA championship in 2008 after winning four national events, including his debut race. A little known fact, in testing, Massey concluded the National Time Trials with an average reaction time of .042.

For the seasoned veteran, Worsham, he remembers his rookie days back in the early 1990s. He was the overwhelming pick for the Funny Car division in his first season with the Alan Johnson Racing/Al Anabi operation.

Worsham emerged from both major nitro tests in January as the quickest Funny Car racer.

“I’m honored that the gang at CompetitionPlus.com thought that highly of us,” Worsham said. “The talent that Alan Johnson has assembled for this team certainly makes such a prediction realistic. Anytime you have someone of the talent level of Alan Johnson, anything is possible. However, we will be content just to take 2009 one race at a time and see what shakes out.”

CompetitionPlus.com also selected Mopar Pro Stock racer Allen Johnson to win big in the ultra-competitive Pro Stock car division while Andrew Hines is predicted to lead a one-two Harley-Davidson charge in Pro Stock Motorcycle.
