For the operator of the Rolling O merchandise trailer on the NHRA Manufacturer’s Midway, this weekend’s NHRA Kragen O’Reilly Winternationals marks the first time in nine years that he will open the store without his wife Hollie Faulkner working alongside.

Hollie died of a sudden illness on December 21, 2008, leaving Faulkner and their then four-month old daughter Emma behind.

Faulkner said Thursday’s experience was tough emotionally not just for himself, but those close to her as well.

“On a scale of one to ten in terms of pain, attending this weekend’s race was about a 40,” Faulkner admitted. “The hardest thing is seeing the pain on the faces of those who were close to her. I know how they feel.”

On Friday evening, a gathering of friends and some family will celebrate her life in a memorial service slated for 6 PM, PST at the Ron Capps-Matt Hagan hospitality area within the Don Schumacher Racing compound. Racers for Christ chaplain Larry Smiley will preside over the service which will include singing and the opportunity to share memories of their fallen friend.

Also attending the memorial will be Hollie’s parents Kay and Charles Cagle, along with Emma.

Faulkner says this evening’s memorial will provide grief-stricken friends the opportunity to share their love for a person who was more than special in the community.

“She was someone who the word special just didn’t fully describe,” Falkner added. “You won’t be able to find one person who could say anything bad about her, she was just that kind of a person. Before Hollie passed, the only person I knew that carried that kind of status was Darrell Russell.”

Faulkner, now a single parent, will operate the Rolling O Store for 20 races this season, missing only St. Louis, Brainerd, Memphis and Richmond in order to tend to personal business.

Faulkner intends to stay in Little Rock, Ark., and will receive a considerable amount of help in raising Emma from the Cagles.

“We have the most amazing six month old baby girl that God allowed anyone to have,” Faulkner added. “Trading Hollie for Emma was a tough trade to make, and while I don’t fully understand the reasoning now, I’m sure it will be revealed one day. Until then, I’m just going to love Emma with everything I have and continue to miss Hollie just as much.”
