MCINTIRE LEADS MARCH MEET QUALIFYING WITH RECORD RUN

Mike McIntire ensured he would place his name in Bakersfield March Meet history, even if it is provisional status.

McIntire, who made the trek from Chesterland, Ohio, vaulted his way into drag racing history with the quickest-ever Nostalgia Funny Car run during first day qualifying at the Good Vibrations March Meet in Bakersfield, Ca.

McIntire stopped the timers at 5.549 seconds at 241.63 miles per hour. His pass also represents the second-quickest ever in NHRA Heritage Series Drag Racing history.

"We weren’t planning on it running the quickest-ever run, that’s for sure," McIntire admitted. "We were just kind of going out and doing our thing, and it just kind of happened that way."

McIntire admits just racing Bakersfield is a dream, but this goes beyond what he and his team expected.

"It’s crazy. I’ve been watching this on the live feed and reading about it for years. We were always just playing around on the East Coast, so it means a lot. This place is insane. There’s so many Fuel cars and so many people. It’s like nothing else. So it means a lot right now to be where we’re at."

Slipping into second was former NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series driver John Hale, who laid down a 5 574, 247.16. Defending event champion Kris Krabill was third (5.605).

Richard Townsend's Camaro is on the bubble with a 6.037.

Although he was fourth quickest, no one could come close to Dan Horan Jr.'s 260.91 mile per hour blast.

In Nostalgia Top Fuel, Jim Murphy put the Roland Leong-tuned dragster on top with a 5.724 elapsed time at 222.29 miles per hour. A close second was Dusty Green with a 5.734.

Rick McGee is on the bubble.

Past March Meet Champion Dan Hix is the frontrunner in the Fuel Altered division with a 6.284 elapsed time at 237.24 miles per hour.

In Sportsman competition, Kin Bates became the first A/Fueler to dip into the five-second zone with a 5.978 elapsed time. Other low qualifiers included John Morottek (Jr. Fuel), Richard Phillips (7.0 Pro), Dan Crisp (A/Gas), Tod Barker (B/Gas), Wayne Hoover (C/Gas), Brad Akers (D/Gas), Stan Heiber (NE-1), Danny See (NE-2) and Carl Carlson (NE-3).
