PS DRIVER LAUGHLIN PLANS TO MAKE ’17 DEBUT IN GAINESVILLE

Last season, Alex Laughlin competed full-time in NHRA’s Pro Stock class in the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.

That will not be the case in 2017.

Laughlin confirmed to CompetitionPlus.com on Thursday he will miss the season-opening Winternationals (Feb. 9-12) in Pomona, Calif., and the Arizona Nationals (Feb. 24-26) in Phoenix.

“We are planning to be at Gainesville (Fla.) and I’m hoping to be at the remaining races after Gainesville, depending on funding,” Laughlin said. “I will be in a couple of other different classes of cars also. I will still be at the track for sure, just in various categories.”

The Gatornationals are March 16-19 in Gainesville.

Laughlin, 28, wouldn’t disclose the other categories he may race in – besides Pro Stock – just yet.

A year ago, Laughlin ran a couple of races in Top Alcohol Dragster. He made his debut in that class last October at the Fallnationals at the Texas Motorplex near Dallas.

In 2016, Laughlin competed in all 24 NHRA national event races, highlighted by his inaugural Pro Stock race victory at St. Louis, Sept. 25. He powered his Gas Monkey Garage Chevy Camaro to a final round win over Bo Butner. Laughlin also captured one No.1 qualifying spot at the Mile-High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway in Denver in July.

Laughlin just missed finishing in the top 10 in the points standings to make it into the Countdown to the Championship, coming in 11th place.

Laughlin had a 17-23 round record in 2016 and he also had a runner-up finish at Dallas, losing to Drew Skillman in the finals.

Laughlin made his NHRA Pro Stock debut in Sonoma, Calif., in 2015 and ran a total of seven races.
