2012 NHRA WINTERNATIONALS - RESULTS
SUNDAY - FORCE, MASSEY AND ANDERSON WIN O’REILLY AUTO PARTS NHRA WINTERNATIONALS
John Force raced to his 134th career Funny Car victory Sunday at the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals presented by Super Start Batteries at historic Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.
Spencer Massey (Top Fuel) and Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) also were winners of the season-opening NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event.
“It’s a great start,” Force said. “You really want to perform. I know all those other kids on our teams and others, like Cruz Pedregon, the Schumacher teams, [Tim] Wilkerson, and [Bob] Tasca, those guys are going to win races, and it was just nice to get a win under my belt. Those boys are bad out there. To make that top 10 is going to be tough. Somebody’s going to be left out, so I’m just going to keep fighting and keep my nose clean.”
Force, 62, used a holeshot start to claim his sixth win at this event and 15th at this track with a performance of 4.080 seconds at 315.64 mph in his Castrol GTX High Mileage Ford Mustang. Runner-up Mike Neff finished in 4.036 at 316.82 in his Castrol GTX Mustang.
“Before the final, I said, ‘What are we going to do ‘Guido?’ (crew chief Dean Antonelli),” Force said. “He said, ‘We can’t race him the way we are, running .12 or .14. We’re going to have to go after it, and if it smokes the tires, we’ll go home.’ They were all over there, looking at the numbers, and it just went. It wasn’t quick enough to beat him. He was late, so I got the win. He told me something distracted him.”
In her much-publicized debut, Force’s 23-year-old daughter Courtney lost in the second round to Neff, while the elder Force defeated his daughter’s rookie rival, Alexis DeJoria, in a close first-round meeting. Force also beat Tim Wilkerson, and Gary Densham to reach the final round.
Massey, who finished second in the points standings last year, opened the new season in first place by outrunning Antron Brown in the final round to take his seventh career Top Fuel victory and first at Pomona. Massey posted a 3.750 at 325.77 in his FRAM/Prestone dragster to hold off Brown’s charging Matco Tools dragster, which trailed with a 3.794 at 320.43.
“Coming up a little short and ending up in second place last year made us that much more hungry and motivated to win a championship, so we focused this winter and acted like there wasn’t an offseason,” said Massey, who beat Steve Faria, Clay Millican and Tony Schumacher in early rounds.
“It shows that they know what it takes to get the car down the racetrack,” Massey continued. “After the second round, we didn’t have any computer data, and (crew chiefs) Phil (Shuler) and Todd (Okuhara) tuned that thing like it was a Top Fuel car from 1968. They looked at the plugs, looked at the bearings, and it went 3.74 at 328 mph. It’s awesome to start like this and have the No. 1 spot going into Phoenix. This is my life dream, and we’re living it.”
In Pro Stock, Anderson raced to his 71st career victory and fifth at the Winternationals, by powering his Summit Racing Equipment Pontiac to a 6.549 at 210.87 to hold off Jeg Coughlin’s JEGS.com/Mopar Dodge Avenger, which trailed with a 6.586 at 209.62.
Anderson raced past Larry Morgan, Allen Johnson and teammate and defending world champ Jason Line to advance to the final.
“I wasn’t the quickest driver out here today, but I was very consistent,” Anderson said. “We managed to stop the big yellow Mopar [of Jeg Coughlin in the final]. He sure came out swinging. You’re always aware of how good Jeg is driving. I’ve never been very good at tuning that kind of stuff out, but it worked today. The crew made great decisions, and here we are back in the winner’s circle again.”
The NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series continues next weekend (Feb. 17-19) at Firebird International Raceway near Phoenix with the NHRA Arizona Nationals.

SATURDAY - LUCAS, HIGHT, LINE EARN NO. 1 QUALIFYING POSITIONS AT O’REILLY AUTO PARTS NHRA WINTERNATIONALS AT POMONA
Morgan Lucas raced to the No. 1 qualifying position in Top Fuel Saturday as rain shortened qualifying at the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals presented by Super Start Batteries at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.
Robert Hight and Jason Line also were No. 1 qualifiers in their respective categories at the first of 23 races in the 2012 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing season. NHRA officials were forced to cancel the final qualifying session when persistent rain showers moved into the Pomona area in the afternoon.
Lucas powered his GEICO / Lucas Oil dragster to a 3.783-second run at 325.06 mph to take the top spot in the field as teams took advantage of cooler track and air temperatures. It was Lucas’ fifth No. 1 qualifier of his career and first at the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals, where he raced to the Top Fuel victory one year ago.
“We’ve made some good runs in the past, but I’ve never driven a car like this one,” Lucas said. “The way it drives and the way it steers is so nice it’s crazy. To start the year like this is tremendous. We found two really good guys with our crew chiefs Aaron (Brooks) and Rod (Centorbi) that have shown what our core group is capable of.”
Lucas will face Rod Fuller in Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations. Tony Schumacher, a six-time winner at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, qualified sixth, while 2011 NHRA Top Fuel world champion runner-up Spencer Massey qualified second in the field.
In Funny Car, Hight also took advantage of the cool conditions and drove his Auto Club Ford Mustang to the top of the field with a run of 4.060 at 316.52 to take his third No. 1 qualifier at this event and 40th of his career.
“It’s amazing how things can change so fast,” Hight said. “We went in this morning not qualified and ended up going to the No. 1 spot. We lost a run the first run here; it broke a blower drive shaft. We put that behind us, but we went out the next run, and it shook. So there were big, big decisions today. The temperature dropped, and the track got even better. I would have liked to have gotten another run. Jimmy (Prock, crew chief) looked at the run, and he thought we would have run better.”
Hight will line up against rookie Todd Lesenko in the first round of eliminations. Hight’s teammate, Courtney Force, who is making her Funny Car debut at this event, qualified 12th. Defending Funny Car world champion Matt Hagan qualified ninth in the field, while 14-time Auto Club Raceway at Pomona winner John Force qualified sixth.
Pro Stock defending world champion Jason Line continued his success from 2011 by racing to the top spot in the category. Line’s run in his Summit Racing Pontiac GXP of 6.535 at 212.23 was strong enough to give the defending event winner his third No. 1 qualifier at Pomona and 25th of his career.
“We finally made a better run today,” Line said. “There’s more left, and we’re struggling a little bit with Greg’s (Anderson, teammate) car right now, but it’s good that we made a solid run with at least one of our cars. We didn’t test much this winter because we’ll be taking delivery on our new Camaros at about the time of the Atlanta race. It’s tough at the first of the year without much testing, but we were able to pick up where we left off from last year.”
Line will face Grace Howell in the first round of eliminations Sunday while Line’s teammate Anderson qualified fifth in the field. Four-time Pro Stock world champion Jeg Coughlin qualified 14th for his first event back after sitting out the 2011 season.

FRIDAY - TASCA, LUCAS AND EDWARDS RACE TO TOP QUALIFYING SPOTS AFTER DAY TWO OF THE O’REILLY AUTO PARTS NHRA WINTERNATIONALS
Bob Tasca raced to the provisional No. 1 qualifying position in Funny Car action Friday at the 52nd annual O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals presented by Super Start Batteries at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona.
Morgan Lucas (Top Fuel) and Mike Edwards (Pro Stock) also raced to the provisional top qualifying spot in their respective categories at the season opening race of the 2012 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.
Tasca drove his MotorCraft/Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang to the provisional No. 1 position with a 4.109 second pass at 309.34 mph during Friday’s qualifying efforts. If it holds, it would be Tasca’s third career No. 1 qualifying position.
“That 4.10, based on what everyone else ran, was pretty impressive,” Tasca said. “I tell ya, it wasn’t much of an off-season for us. We tested a week in December and another week-plus in January, so we probably have 50 runs on that Motorcraft/Quick Lane car. We were disappointed with how we finished the season last year, so we dug deep this off-season and made some great runs in testing, and it’s always nice to translate into a race-day tune-up.”
Defending Top Fuel event winner Morgan Lucas ran the quickest Top Fuel lap during Friday’s qualifying efforts with a 3.835 second pass at 316.38 mph but it was the GEICO/Lucas Oil dragster’s pass of 3.832 seconds at 320.28 mph Thursday that earned him the provisional top spot heading into Saturday.
“To be honest, I’m as shocked as anybody that we’re still low with a 3.83,” said Lucas. “Our run today was pretty similar to what we did yesterday other than that it dropped a cylinder down track. I have to sing the praises of my guys. Since Aaron [Brooks, crew chief] and Rod [Centorbi, assistant crew chief] came over this winter, we adopted the motto ‘If it’s not perfect, it’s not right.’ The way the car is running is a reward for the hard work and extra hours they put in.”
In Friday Pro Stock action, no one was able to out run Edwards’ 6.545 second pass at 211.86 mph from Thursday in his Penhall/Interstate Batteries Pontiac GXP. Edwards’s pass of 6.571 seconds at 211.53 mph Friday wasn’t exactly what the team wanted but tomorrow’ forecast calls for much better conditions. If he holds on to the top spot it would be his 41st of his career and fifth at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.
“Our car made a hard move out of the groove right off the starting line in the right lane,” said Edwards. “The 60-foot time was about the same as yesterday, but leaving crooked scrubbed off some E.T. If the conditions are good for Saturday morning’s first session, everybody should pick up and I think that it’s going to take a 6.52 to end up with the No. 1 qualifying spot.”
Qualifying at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona will wrap up with two qualifying sessions Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. Eliminations will begin Sunday at 11 a.m.

THURSDAY - BECKMAN, LUCAS AND EDWARDS EARN PROVISIONAL NO. 1 QUALIFYING POSITIONS AT THE NHRA SEASON OPENER
Jack Beckman raced to the provisional No. 1 qualifying position in Funny Car Thursday at the 52nd annual O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals presented by Super Start Batteries at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona.
Morgan Lucas (Top Fuel) and Mike Edwards (Pro Stock) also were qualifying leaders at the 2012 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series season.
Beckman drove his Valvoline NextGen Dodge Charger to the provisional No. 1 spot with a 4.139 second pass at 308.14 mph to best the ultra-competitive Funny Car class. If Beckman holds on to the top spot it will be the fifth of his career and second at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.
“The most important thing is if we can go down the track and get good computer data, we can pick away at it from there,” Beckman said. “If you go out there and smoke the tires, you don’t know how much you missed it by. We all know that 4.13 is not going to hold, but we feel we have as good a shot of stepping up as any other car out there.”
Courtney Force made her first run under NHRA Funny Car competition in her Traxxas Ford Mustang with a 4.210 second pass at 303.16 mph, which was good enough for the provisional sixth spot. Courtney will line up next to her father and Funny Car legend 15-time world champ, John Force, for the second round of qualifying of the NHRA season opener.
Defending Top Fuel event winner Morgan Lucas drove his GEICO/Lucas Oil dragster to the top of the pack with his pass of 3.832 seconds at 320.28 mph during Thursday’s qualifying efforts.
“The weather conditions today were pretty similar to what we had in testing, so our team has a lot of confidence in this range,” Lucas said. “Hopefully Sunday is the same, but I know we’re expecting cooler conditions Saturday, so you never know what’s going to happen, but hopefully we can keep running along with the big guys.”
In Pro Stock, Edwards looks to secure his 41st No. 1 of his career and fifth at Auto Club Raceway with his 6.545 second pass at 211.86 mph Thursday in his Penhall/K&N/Interstate Pontiac GXP.
“It feels really, really good,” Edwards said. “When you start off a new season, you never know what to expect, and we got off to a great start. It was a great run. My guys did a phenomenal job. We just made one of the nicest runs we’ve made in Pomona in a long time, so it’s a great start for us. Hopefully, we can build on this tomorrow and see what happens.”
Qualifying of the 52nd annual O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals presented by Super Start Batteries at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona will continue Friday, Feb. 10 at 1:30 p.m. followed by the final two qualifying sessions Saturday, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. Eliminations will begin Sunday at 11 a.m.
