2012 NHRA FALLNATIONALS - EVENT RESULTS
SUNDAY - BROWN, TASCA, A. JOHNSON AND RAY EARN VICTORIES AT TEXAS MOTORPLEX
Antron Brown raced to the Top Fuel victory Sunday at the AAA Texas NHRA Fall Nationals at the famed all-concrete Texas Motorplex near Dallas.
Bob Tasca (Funny Car), Allen Johnson (Pro Stock) and Michael Ray (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were winners at the second of six playoff events in the NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship.
Brown claimed his fifth victory of the season and moved into a tie for the points lead with the driver he beat in the final round, teammate Spencer Massey. Brown powered his Matco Tools dragster to a 3.898 second run at 311.49 mph to hold off Massey’s FRAM dragster, which finished with a 3.945 at 300.60.
“This is definitely the way to rebound,” said Brown, the playoff top seed who dropped to fourth in the standings after a first round loss at the playoff-opener last weekend in Charlotte, N.C. “I have to give credit to my team for sticking together. We were winning in the first round in Charlotte when we broke an input shaft. It’s so easy to get down after something like that. We came here, and the car was throwing us fits by being overaggressive. Brian [Corradi] and Mark [Oswald, co-crew chiefs] kept backing it off until they got a good handle on it in the semis.”
Brown and Massey lead seven-time world champ Tony Schumacher by 24 points and the suddenly surging Shawn Langdon is 41 back as the playoff race in the 8,000-horsepower category gets intense.
“In that final, we had to give it everything we had against the FRAM car,” said Brown, who beat three Countdown contenders -- David Grubnic, Langdon and Morgan Lucas – in the first three rounds. “We edged them, and it felt really good to win and to tie them in the points lead. We have four races left, and it’s going to be a slugfest to the end. Everybody’s throwing haymakers. It’s an all-out battle royal right now.”
Funny Car featured a final round battle between two drivers who aren’t in the Countdown playoffs, as Tasca prevailed in a tire-smoking final round duel with defending world champ Matt Hagan. Both cars lost traction near mid-track, but Tasca was able to guide his Motorcraft/Quick Lane Shelby Ford Mustang to the finish line in front of Hagan’s Aaron’s/Mopar Dodge Charger.
“This weekend just kind of epitomized our whole season, just keep fighting,” Tasca said. “We went through three motors. The guys haven’t worked this hard all year, but to put Motorcraft and Ford in the winner’s circle where they belong, I tell you, is long overdue for our team. We just kept fighting. Marc [Denner] and Chris [Cunningham, crew chiefs] just pulled together and got this car back on track. It wasn’t pretty. Trust me, there was some driving that had to be done out there, but we got it done. We got a win, and hopefully this is the momentum we need to finish the year strong.”
Tasca outran Alexis DeJoria, top qualifier Courtney Force and defending event winner Cruz Pedregon to advance to the final round. Tasca was very proud of his team’s effort in taking out two top Countdown contenders and claiming the team’s first victory of the season and fourth of his career.
“We have as much fight now, and I think we’re more determined now than ever before,” Tasca said. “Not making the top 10 was a lot of heartache for the guys on this team. I said to my team, ‘This will be a defining six races because I want to see what we’re all made of, me included. Are we going to roll over and play dead these next six races, or are we going to come out with some fire in us and take this thing to Pomona and let everyone know that we may not be in this year but watch out next year.’ I think this weekend was a defining weekend for our team because we fought through some tough rounds, three motor changes in four rounds in this heat, and we put ourselves in a position to win. I did my job, and we’re leaving with the trophy.”
Series leader Ron Capps, who lost to Hagan in the semifinals, increased his Countdown playoff lead to 96 over second place Mike Neff, who lost in the second round to Pedregon. Saturday’s Traxxas Nitro Shootout winner, John Force, lost in the first round to Hagan.
Johnson earned his fifth Pro Stock victory of the season and first in the Countdown playoffs by outrunning local favorite Erica Enders in the final round. Johnson’s Team Mopar Dodge Avenger pulled away at the start and finished with a 6.598 at 210.93, while Enders’ GK Motorsports Chevy Cobalt slowed to a 6.835 at 209.39.
“The Mopar Dodge Avenger was consistent,” Johnson said. “It was low in all four qualifying rounds, low in two of four rounds today, and got the job done. We’ve got a great crew that makes great decisions. We’ve got great power from Dad [Roy Johnson] and the guys at the engine shop. The driver, fortunately, did his job.”
Johnson outran the ‘Professor of Pro Stock’ Warren Johnson, Charlotte winner Dave Connolly and the ultra-quick Vincent Nobile in the first three rounds. With the win, Johnson increased his points lead to 93 over defending world champ Jason Line.
“I looked at the elimination ladder last night and thought, ‘Oh, my, I’m going to have to work for this one,’” Johnson said. “We just took it one round at a time without getting ahead of ourselves. Somebody who’s won several championships called me before this thing ever started and told me, ‘Just enjoy it, and have fun.’ That advice was very important. I'm up for this challenge, and I'm enjoying it.”
In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Texas native Ray claimed his first career victory, powering his Viper Motorcycle Company/GottSpeed Racing Buell to a performance of 6.920 at 192.77 to hold off Karen Stoffer’s GEICO Suzuki, which trailed with a 7.028 at 190.48.
“It’s really surreal, and I don’t think it’s really sank in yet that I’m getting to go home with the biggest thing that I’ve worked my whole life for,” Ray said. “When we got here this weekend, we knew we had a great bike that could go out there and be competitive, coming off our performance in Charlotte. I just knew that as long as I just kept my cool and rode the bike consistently there’s not a better tuner out here when it’s hot than Matt Smith, and I think we showcased that today.”
Ray, who beat Scotty Pollacheck, Hector Arana Jr., and Andrew Hines to advance to his second career final round, moved from seventh to fourth in the standings with the victory. Points leader Eddie Krawiec increased his championship lead to 11 over second place Hines.
“I think there’s no better time than now to start a run at [the championship],” Ray said. “I don’t think there’s any better team on Sunday to be consistent than our bike. I think if I’m sitting here answering questions in Reading my response might be a little bit different, but right now I just want to go out and be consistent and then let the points shake out where they’re supposed to.”
The NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship playoffs continues with the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals, Sept. 28-30 at Gateway Motorsports Park near St. Louis.
SATURDAY - JOHN FORCE EARNS $100,000 TRAXXAS NITRO SHOOTOUT VICTORY
Langdon, C. Force, A. Johnson and Arana Jr. are No. 1 qualifiers at AAA Texas NHRA Fall Nationals at Texas Motorplex
John Force raced to the $100,000 victory in the Traxxas Nitro Shootout Saturday at the AAA Texas NHRA Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex near Dallas.
Force edged Shootout top seed Ron Capps in the final round of the lucrative specialty race that featured eight Funny Car winners from the 17-race regular season. Force powered his Castrol GTX High Mileage Ford Mustang to a performance of 4.218 seconds at 296.57 mph to hold off Capps’ NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger, who trailed with a 4.223 at 296.50.
Force beat Jack Beckman and Jeff Arend in early rounds to advance to the final.
“It’s a great day and we won,” Force said. “The 100 grand goes to my employees. I don’t take any money. It’s not about that for me. It’s about winning for them and the fans and the sponsors. Traxxas putting up that 100 grand, it’s good for our sport. It’s good to have money out here that can subsidize teams, that can help teams, and anybody can win it, and I won it.”
In qualifying, Shawn Langdon (Top Fuel), Courtney Force (Funny Car), Allen Johnson (Pro Stock) and Hector Arana Jr. (Pro Stock Motorcycle) will lead their categories into Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations at the second of six playoff events in the NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship.
Langdon captured his third consecutive No. 1 qualifying position in Top Fuel, as he posted a 3.827 at 322.34 in his Al-Anabi Racing dragster.
"That run was just [team manager/tuner] Alan Johnson magic," Langdon said. "This morning, he came out and pretty much said that he wasn't worried about getting in the field - he wanted to go to No. 1. It was fortunate that we were in the right lane in the right conditions, and it stuck to put us No. 1 by two-thousandths of a second. Our main objective for the second run was to get a good setup tomorrow. I think we accomplished that today.”
Langdon will meet Scott Palmer in the opening round as he goes for his second straight playoff victory.
"I think the mojo is going good right now,” Langdon said. “This is the third No. 1 in a row, and we had a good race when we won in Charlotte. We're looking to keep the car in the winner's circle; that's the main goal.”
Series points leader Tony Schumacher was second with a 3.829 at 320.13 in his U.S. Army dragster and Doug Kalitta was third in his Mac Tools dragster with a 3.836 at 322.34.
In Funny Car, the younger Force earned her second No. 1 qualifying position of the season, with her Friday performance of 4.081 at 308.21 in her Traxxas Ford Mustang. She will race fellow rookie driver Todd Lesenko in the first round.
“We’re going to have lane choice tomorrow, and that’s definitely where we want to be,” Courtney Force said. “It’s always good picking up the bonus points going into the Countdown to the Championship. We try to get every point we can because it’s all going to count in the end, but most importantly, we’re in the No. 1 spot and held it for three rounds. Going into race day tomorrow, I think we’ve got a good race car. This Traxxas Ford Mustang is showing in the heat, it can run when the track cools down, and I think we’re going to give everyone a run for their money.”
Tim Wilkerson was second in his Levi Ray & Shoup Mustang with a 4.089 at 302.75 and was followed by Jack Beckman, who posted a 4.109 at 303.98 in his NextGen/Valvoline Dodge Charger. Series points leader Capps will start sixth as he goes for his second straight playoff win and Shootout winner Force will try to win his eighth Texas Motorplex title from the No. 10 starting spot.
Johnson raced to a career-best 10th No. 1 qualifying position of the season in Pro Stock, powering his Team Mopar Dodge Avenger to a track record performance of 6.550 at 211.99. Johnson will meet Warren Johnson in the opening round.
"I can remember my first one like it was yesterday, and you wonder if you're ever going to get another one after that," Johnson said. "It's a really good feeling. It's been a great year for our Mopar Dodge Avenger qualifying No. 1 so many times. We're hitting on all cylinders. We have a consistent strategy right now of trying to make good, clean, safe runs every time right now without pushing it.”
Three-time season winner Erica Enders was second in her GK Motorsports Chevy Cobalt with a 6.557 at 210.57 and Charlotte winner Jason Line was third in his Summit Racing Chevy Camaro with a 6.559 at 210.64.
In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Arana Jr. claimed his second No. 1 of the season and ninth of his career with a performance of 6.852 at 195.34 on his Lucas Oil Buell. He will face Matt Guidera in the first round.
“I honestly did not [expect to improve],” Arana Jr. said. “One of the guys was down there talking, and I said, ‘We’re not going to pick up. It’s too hot.’ Surprisingly we did, but if you look at my increments, everything finally came together.”
Hector Arana Sr. was second on his Lucas Oil Buell with a 6.862 at 196.24, followed by series leader Eddie Krawiec, who posted a 6.887 at 194.49 on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson. Charlotte winner Andrew Hines was fourth on his Harley-Davidson with a 6.892 at 194.10.
FRIDAY QUALIFYING - C. FORCE, SCHUMACHER, A. JOHNSON AND ARANA SR. LEAD QUALIFYING AT TEXAS MOTORPLEX
Courtney Force raced to the qualifying lead in Funny Car Friday at the AAA Texas NHRA Fall Nationals at the all-concrete Texas Motorplex near Dallas.
Tony Schumacher (Top Fuel), Allen Johnson (Pro Stock) and Hector Arana Sr. (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also led their categories at the second of six playoff events in the NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship.
The 24-year-old rookie driver powered her Traxxas Ford Mustang to a leading time of 4.081 seconds at 308.21 mph and if her performance holds through Saturday’s two qualifying sessions (11 a.m. and 2 p.m.), it will be the second No. 1 qualifying position of her career.
She was pleased to make two solid runs as her team is gearing up for the $100,000 Traxxas Nitro Shootout tomorrow. The lucrative Funny Car all-star race was rescheduled for this event after it was rained out twice in Indianapolis earlier in the month. Force, the fan vote-lottery winner for the No. 8 starting spot, will face top seed Ron Capps in the first round of the Shootout.
“I think that so far today we’ve proved that we have a good race car, and we can run it in the heat during the day and we can run it when it cools down a little bit at night,” Force said. “We’re hoping that the 4.08 stays tomorrow. I’d be so excited and so proud to get my second No. 1 qualifying position in my rookie season. We wanted to stay in the top half of the field, that was our main goal today so we can just focus on the Traxxas Shootout, going in and getting that 100 grand tomorrow.”
Tim Wilkerson was second in his Levi Ray & Shoup Mustang with a 4.081 at 308.21, Jack Beckman was third with a 4.109 at 303.98 and defending event winner Cruz Pedregon was fourth with a 4.129 at 288.39 in the Snap-on Tools Toyota.
In Top Fuel, series points leader Schumacher was quickest with a 3.829 at 320.13 in his U.S. Army dragster. If his effort holds through the end of qualifying it will be his fourth No. 1 of the season and 71st of his career.
"That was a great run," said Schumacher, a five-time winner at the Motorplex. "I've always said that we're a good high-pressure team. How do you get any more high-pressure than that? Friday night qualifying is what's going to set the field. It was 90 [degrees] today, and it's going to be 90 tomorrow and 90 on Sunday. We went up there in a situation where we should be cautious because we weren't in the show. For Mike [Green, crew chief] to go up there and do what he did, that's pretty gutsy. Those qualifying bonus points are going to make a difference. On the first run, I was a little disappointed that we didn't get any. I won a championship by two points [in 2009]. It makes qualifying pretty exciting."
Doug Kalitta was second with a 3.836 at 322.34 in his Mac Tools dragster and J.R. Todd was third with a 3.839 at 317.34 in his Total Equipment and Service dragster. Charlotte winner Shawn Langdon was 16th in his Al-Anabi Racing dragster after two sessions.
Johnson moved into position to claim a season-best 10th No. 1 qualifying position in Pro Stock, powering his Team Mopar Dodge Avenger to a 6.568 at 211.43.
"Building up those little points in qualifying is what we're shooting for, and we did that today," said Johnson. "This is a great track with a great, flat surface and a lot of traction. I can't say enough about my crew. Everything is perfect right now. We're running on eight-and-a-half cylinders. The car is consistent, and we're looking for more of the same tomorrow.”
Charlotte winner Jason Line was second with a 6.586 at 210.54 in his Summit Racing Chevy Camaro and three-time season winner and Houston native Erica Enders was third with a 6.586 at 210.41 in her GK Motorsports Chevy Cobalt.
Arana Sr. paced the Pro Stock Motorcycle field with a performance of 6.898 at 195.11 on his Lucas Oil Buell. If the time holds it will be his fifth of the season and 22nd of his career.
“I definitely feel happier,” Arana Sr. said. “We have more momentum going especially with the second run. We picked up the pace a little bit. The track has been great. I think we can probably get even more aggressive tomorrow.”
Hector Arana Jr. rode his Lucas Oil Buell to the second spot with a 6.899 at 193.63, while the Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley Davidsons of Eddie Krawiec and Charlotte winner Andrew Hines were third and fourth respectively.
