The IHRA ventures yearly into the Washington, DC market for the Torco Race Fuels President's Cup Nationals. Originally created as a Pro Modified marquee event, this national event has developed into a fan favorite with drag racing's nitro classes. Records are traditionally set every year at the venture north of the Potomac River.

BARKLAGE CONQUERS THUNDER VALLEY TO MOVE TOWARDS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Cody
Barklage of Eldon, Missouri had it when it counted and made it through
three
tough rounds of racing to win the Aeromotive Nitro Coupe Challenge
during the
O'Reilly Super Chevy Show presented by JEGS at Bristol Dragway,
known as
Thunder Valley.
Cody took out Kernersville, NC racer Doug Winters in the
finals. Winters
did Cody a favor in the semis when he defeated Tony
"Sandman" Williams of
Millington, Tennessee. Williams is Cody's closest
rival in the championship
chase, followed by Cody's brother Zach Barklage,
who was the event's top
qualifier with a blistering 6.156 at 225.67 miles per
hour. Cody's 6.300 was
the second-fastest qualifying time and he also turned
in the fastest
Aeromotive Nitro Coupe pass with a run of 229.39 mph in the
semis.

Records tumbled all weekend as racers
vied for positions in the European Drag Racing Championships. England’s Andy
Carter in the Lucas Oil dragster set a Top Fuel elapsed time record of 4.703,
Pro Stock E.T. went down to 6.781, courtesy of Finland’s Eero Knihtilä, and
Sweden’s Micke Lindahl recorded the 6.110 E.T. record in Pro Modified.
Flags from all over Europe
and Scandinavia fluttered above the tens of thousands of race fans and
hundreds
of different pit bays as the weather stayed dry and mainly cool
providing the
machines with good air. FIA Champions were Switzerland’s Urs Erbacher
in Top
Fuel, Britain’s Dave Wilson wrapped up his fifth-straight Top Methanol
Dragster
title, Sweden’s Freddy Fagerström took Top Methanol Funny Car in his
rookie
year, Swede Jimmy Ålund took his fourth straight Pro Stock championship
and
fellow countryman Micke Gullqvist wrestled the Pro Mod championship
away from a
tight knit pack. FIM/UEM Super Twin Championship went to Switzerland’s
Lorenz Stäuble, Top Fuel Bike to Britain’s Ian King and Pro Stock Bike
to Denmark’s Tom
Tinndahn.
