THURSDAY SPORTSMAN – DEMKE, LINDBERG HEADLINE FIRST DAY POMONA QUALIFYING
Not content with knowing he’s going to be the NHRA Lucas Oil Champion, Chris Demke opened first day qualifying at the NHRA AAA Finals with the provisional No. 1 qualifying effort. Demke cranked out a 5.277 second pass at 269.67 miles per hour.
Just three years after being critically injured in a non-racing motorcycle accident, Shawn Cowie continues to make a remarkable comeback. Thursday afternoon the Delta, British Columbia-based driver piloted his Top Alcohol Dragster to the second quickest run.
Cowie drove his supercharged dragster to a 5.303 elapsed time at 273.05 miles per hour. Ashley Sanford anchored the 16-car field with 19 entries on the grounds.
Swedish Top Alcohol Funny Car racer Jonnie Lindberg thundered his way to the top of the field by beating out the twenty other entries with a 5.571, 261.07 to beat out Doug Gordon and Kris Hool.
Local Comp racer John Mihovetz put nearly three-tenths between him and No. 2 qualifier Clint Neff when he obliterated the AA/Turbocharged Automatic with a 5.920 elapsed time -0.900 under the 6.820 index.
Bo Butner paced the Super Stock division with his SS/BA Cobra Jet (8.767, -1.133) while Victor Cagnazzi was the man in Stock with a 9.206, -1.094 performance behind the wheel of his BB/Stock COPO Camaro.
