For performance fans, no track is better situated. Houston Raceway Park
benefits from incredible atmospheric conditions because of its proximity to
Trinity Bay, which feeds the facility cool air. The track’s first NHRA national
event, in fall 1988, established HRP as one of the sport’s quickest.

NHRA’s annual duel in the desert has been a Southwest fixture since 1985,
when it joined the tour in a late fall slot. Since 1990, it’s been the second
stop on the tour’s westward march and a place for teams to redeem mistakes made
at the opener.

Every February since
1961, fans have flocked to Southern California not just for the un-winterlike
weather, but also for one of drag racing’s grandest traditions: the unveiling of
new cars, drivers, teams, and sponsorships at the NHRA POWERade season opener.
The Big Go West plays out at the fabled facility known for its outstanding
traction, smooth surface, and potential for record performances. Teams hope to
use the opener as a springboard in their pursuit of a spot in the Countdown to 8
championship program that ends in August.

SATURDAY'S EDITION

DOUBLE A DALE RETURNS!  - Okay, you read the news item that Jerry Tolliver’s
crew chief for his new Rockstar-backed Funny Car will be Dale Armstrong, but
have you really considered its meaning?  Armstrong is one of the most talented
tuner/innovators in the sport’s history.  The winner of the first dual Ollie
Award ever presented in the history of the All-Star Drag Racing Team (an honor
shared with his then driver, Kenny Bernstein), Armstrong’s contributions include
now-taken-for-granted things like onboard computers, sophisticated fuel delivery
systems and much, much more.  Apparently refreshed from his recent years spent
restoring Muscle Cars and the like, if Armstrong returns with the same desire
he’s previously demonstrated, he’s capable of making Tolliver not only a winner,
but a champion.  And his tuning “junior partner” isn’t exactly shabby either.
That job will be handled by part-time Funny Car and Fuel Altered competitor Jeff
Diehl.  This is likely to be one heck of a competitive team, and in short
order.
