Pro Extreme racer Gene Hector escaped injury when he experienced a fiery crash during the final qualifying session at the rain-delayed PDRA Texas Nationals in Ennis, Texas.
Hector, of Big Spring, Texas, was out of the left lane groove by mid-track and lost control of his 2014 Corvette, making a sharp turn before impacting the retaining wall. The car then erupted in a ball of fire, sliding on its roof to a stop in the shutdown area.
Hector was uninjured.
“It was a little spooky,” Hector told PDRA-TV following the incident. “There’s no doubt I overdrove the car. I just wanted to get in in the show. Sometimes the competitive edge takes over. It was out of the groove, and I have run here a bunch before . [This track] can be a little unforgiving out of the groove. When it got over in the marbles, it took a hard turn.”
Hector’s incident happened in front of Clint Sheffield, who was able to take evasive action and emerged with his 1941 Willys race car intact.
“It was a tough hit,” admitted Hector.” I am shaken up, but I am good. It sure tore up a pretty race car. [In an incident like this] it scares everyone else a lot more than the driver. It just slows down a bit.”
