Melanie Johnson has become the first drag racer to receive funding from the Shift Up Now Foundation, marking a milestone for gender equality initiatives in motorsports. The selection was announced during Women’s History Month as part of the organization’s 2026 grant program.

The foundation awarded more than $300,000 in financial support to 15 female drivers competing across 10 different racing series this season. Johnson’s inclusion extends the program’s reach into the NHRA ranks for the first time.

Her selection reflects a growing emphasis on supporting female competitors in categories traditionally dominated by men. It also underscores the increasing visibility of women competing in Top Alcohol Dragster competition.

“I’m incredibly honored to join the Shift Up Now Athletes this year and represent an organization that is making things happen for females in motorsport,” said Johnson. “To be the first drag racer included in this group is a privilege, and I’m eager to help expand the foundation’s reach into the NHRA community. Thank you to all of the wonderful people and organizations that support the Shift Up Now Foundation.”

Johnson competes for McPhillips Racing in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, where she has quickly established herself as a contender. Her emergence has been marked by strong finishes at both regional and national events.

Since making her debut in 2025, Johnson has secured her first regional victory at Norwalk. She also recorded multiple semifinal appearances at the U.S. Nationals and the Texas Fall Nationals.

Those performances have elevated her standing within the Top Alcohol Dragster class. They have also drawn increased attention to her long-term potential in professional drag racing.

As a second-generation racer, Johnson’s path reflects both heritage and determination. Her development has been shaped by the competitive demands of the McPhillips Racing program.

Beyond her on-track results, Johnson has pursued opportunities to influence motorsports culture. She serves as a committee member for the Women in Motorsports North America Southern California Chapter.

Her involvement focuses on creating networking channels and professional development pathways for women across racing disciplines. That work aligns with the broader mission of organizations advocating for diversity in motorsports.

Johnson’s partnership with the Shift Up Now Foundation adds to an established group of supporters. Her existing partners include NGK Spark Plugs, Lucas Oil, ARP, and Alan Johnson Performance Engineering.

The collaboration strengthens the resources available to her team entering the 2026 campaign. It also reinforces the importance of strategic backing in the pursuit of championship-level performance.

With the season underway, Johnson and McPhillips Racing remain focused on consistent qualifying efforts and elimination-round execution. Their objective centers on maintaining competitive momentum within a deep Top Alcohol Dragster field.

The grant program represents another step in expanding opportunities for women in drag racing. Johnson’s role as the first recipient from the discipline could influence future participation trends.
