RARE TELEVISION BROADCAST OF 1978 NHRA GATORNATIONALS

 

Boy, do we have a great one for you today. Back in 1978, drag racing's coverage was broadcast in syndication and could appear on any of the big three networks. The same show could appear at 5 PM on ABC, and then across the country at 3 PM on CBS.

This broadcast of the 1978 NHRA Gatornationals features the drag racing legends in Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock competing in the traditional east coast season-opener. You'll also see a full slate of sportsman final round action from Stock to Pro Comp.

Most people know Pat Musi as either one of the pioneering Pro Street champions or most recently the innovating drag racing engine builder who led the push of electronic fuel injection into nitrous Pro Modified. Once upon a time, in a galaxy far, far away, Musi was a competitive NHRA Pro Stock driver who finished fourth best in the 1981 championship chase.

The Popular Hot Rodding Nationals had been a staple of drag racing for many years, and attended by many of the sport's leading touring professionals. In the past, it had been a major divisional event for the NHRA, but in this season U.S. 131, flying the IHRA sanction, was elevated to nationals event status.

Watch as you see IHRA drag racing's movers and shakers, Kenny Bernstein, Mark Oswald, Tom McEwen, Rickie Smith, Roy Hill, and Carol "Bunny" Burkett battle it out for supremacy in Michigan.
