moves along at a feverish pace at Lowe's Motor Speedway's drag strip.
The strip is expected to be completed late this summer in time for the
mid-September inaugural NHRA Carolinas Nationals.

CAPPS REFLECTS EARLY IN 2008

dsa_4269.jpgIt's been a tough 2008 NHRA season so far for Ron Capps, the driver of the NAPA
AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T, who has battled for the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing
Series Funny Car championship right down to the final event the last three
years. After three races, he finds himself in 14th place in the standings
following three first-round losses. It's still early in the 24-event schedule,
and a third consecutive win at the NHRA Spring Nationals this weekend at Houston
Raceway Park would propel him right back in the running.

Capps, who had
entered this event the last two years in either first or second place, and left
both times as the points leader after claiming victories in both, reflects on
this season, the challenges it has presented, and what it will take to get back
on top in his quest to garner his first Funny Car championship.

"We got
spoiled a little bit with the success we've had the last three years," he said.
"At this point of the season the last two years we were leading the points. It's
been a strange beginning to the 2008 season. In particular, the rainouts we had
in the last two events, where we only had two sessions of qualifying in Phoenix
and Gainesville, really changed the weekend for all the teams. So, hopefully
we'll get more than just two runs of qualifying in at Houston.

HIGHT REMEMBERS FIRST WIN

It has been three years since Robert Hight won his first NHRA POWERade
event at Houston Raceway Park. Since that win he has racked up 100
round wins faster than any professional in the fuel categories - Top
Fuel or Funny Car –, finished No.2 in the point standing the past two
seasons and become one of the most feared Funny Car drivers of the
modern era. His meteoric rise has not come without serious heartache
though.

Hight and the rest of the John Force Racing team skipped the 20th
installment of the O’Reilly Spring Nationals last season out of respect
for their fallen teammate Eric Medlen. Following the Gatornationals
Medlen was involved in an on-track testing accident that ultimately
ended his short but exceptional life. Skipping the race was a tough
decision for everyone involved and at the end of the season Hight
looked back on his unsuccessful quest for a championship – one he fell
19 points short of – and realized nothing could have made the season
truly successful.

“Even if we had won the championship,” Hight said, “that wouldn’t have
made it a great year. In fact, there’s not much that would have made it
even a good year because we’ll never have Eric back. I miss him, miss
him like you can’t believe.”

GILBERTSON USING NHRA HOUSTON EVENT AS WARM-UP

Bob Gilbertson is gunning for an IHRA Funny Car championship and
he's hoping the NHRA O'Reilly Spring Nationals in Houston, Texas, will
serve as a springboard towards this objective. This event will serve as
a warm-up for the upcoming IHRA Texas Nationals in San Antonio, Texas
the following weekend. He's tested extensively during the off-season.

"Testing is one thing but racing against somebody
else is why I do this," Gilbertson said.  "It's no secret that we don't yet have
a marketing partner to help us pay the bills and we're actively looking for
support, but if you're not out there to show what you can do it's tough to get
anybody to notice you."

BAMM MOTORSPORTS PLEASED AFTER FIRST RACE

The BAMM motorsports team attended it first race March 22nd as the Quick 8
Outlaws converged on the famed "House Of Hook" in Jackson SC.

After the
new car blues were slowly getting worked out and minimal testing before the
race, the team managed a number 8 qualifing position. Team president Jack
Barfield along with Bryan Morris and Jason Mote handled the tuning duties during
the event. With a string of sixty foot times ranging from 1.00 to 1.03 over the
course of 5 runs the team is looking forward to turning up the wick during
testing in the coming weeks.

EUROPEAN CHAMPION HOPING TO ROPE VICTORY IN HOUSTON

Reigning FIA Top Fuel champion Urs Erbacher will make the trek from his native
Switzerland to Houston Raceway Park this weekend to challenge for the title of
the 21st annual O'Reilly Spring NHRA Nationals. He's also got big plans to
participate in a local rodeo competition while he's in the Lone Star
State.

A custom motorcycle builder on the level of Jesse James at West
Coast Choppers and the Teutul family at Orange County Choppers, Erbacher is a
four-time European drag racing champion who is looking to make his mark in the
United States.

"We're excited to come to the legendary state of Texas,"
Erbacher said. "The 2008 FIA season starts soon at Santa Pod Raceway in England
and we want to be up to full speed by the time our circuit begins. It's very
important to us to defend our title.

FORCE REMEMBERS FRIEND

DSA_4289.jpgJohn Force, drag racing’s biggest winner, remembered rival Al Hofmann with
fondness Monday even while admitting that theirs was an especially contentious
relationship.

Hofmann, who finished second to Force in the 1995 Funny Car standings and
who was a Top 4 finisher five straight seasons in the mid-1990s, died last week
of a heart attack at his home in Florida. He was 60.

“Al Hofmann may not have won the NHRA title,” Force said, “but in my
opinion he was still a champion because he fought me to the wire every year, on
the track and off. I remember the gut wrenching feeling of just having to look
at him knowing how bad he wanted to win.

“I gotta hand it to him, he pulled no punches. He would fight with you or
he would just tell you to go to hell (but) as mad as he made me, I gotta say I
loved the guy for it because he came up just like me on the old East Coast match
race circuit, fighting every day just to feed himself and buy race car parts.”
