The tight-knit Aussie Top Fuel community has been rocked by the news that two-time champion team owner-driver Peter Xiberras will not race again this season.
The loss of Xiberras will reduce the Top Fuel competitor ranks to four teams: Rapisarda Autosport International, Jim Read Racing, Lamattina Top Fuel Racing and part-timer Kyle Putland Racing.
Xiberras’ last outing was at the Perth Motorplex in March, where he defeated Damien Harris in the final.
“The time is right for a break,” Xiberras said. “It is always best to step away ‘on a high,’ I have been considering taking a break for quite some time. Let me be clear – I’m not using the R-word. You will see me out on the track again, but for now, it is time to enjoy Top Fuel racing from the sidelines.”
Xiberras made his Top Fuel debut in 2004 and won back-to-back Aussie Championships in 2021 and 2022. At one stage, he simultaneously held the record for Willowbank Raceway, Perth Motorplex, and Sydney Dragway.
At the 2021 Winternationals, he became the quickest racer outside the USA with a 3.74-second pass at 325.22 mph.
Xiberras races under the family business name of PremiAir Hire, one of Australia’s largest equipment hire companies. It is also heavily involved in the Australian Supercar championship as owner of the two-car PremiAir Nulon team.

Supercars is Australia’s leading motorsport category known worldwide as the home of the Bathurst 1000.
“From the highest of highs of back-to-back championships and records to those events that just didn’t go our way, through it all, I have loved going racing and been so lucky to have the support of a lot of amazing people behind me,” said Xiberras.
“First of all, I must mention my wife, Carmen. She is such an incredible support to me in racing and in business and I could not do this without her.”
“When I started in Top Fuel, I didn’t know what Carmen would think; I figured she would either tell me ‘no way’ or love it…thankfully she loved it and it has been a real family affair with her and my kids, James, Rebecca, Hayley and Christopher. It has been great to race with them alongside me every step of the way.”
“And then there is Tim Adams,” added Xiberras. “He has been with me heading up my Top Fuel operation from day dot, handling all the tuning, engine inspections, builds and more, and I cannot thank him enough for all of the effort and dedication he has shown to PremiAir Racing over all this time.”
“I have never had to worry about rituals or good luck charms other than clearing my head of all the work things and life stuff to get into race mode, as I have so much faith in Tim and the crew.”
“This sport has given me so much and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it. I am so grateful to everyone who’s been part of the journey so far. I will most definitely be back.”
