The International Hot Rod Association has completed its acquisition of the historic motorsports facility in Millington, Tennessee, formerly known as Memphis International Raceway and Memphis Motorsports Park, closing on the property Dec. 23, 2025.
The purchase places one of the region’s most recognizable racing venues under IHRA ownership and marks a return to a track that previously operated under IHRA sanction during a key period of its competitive history.
Originally opened in the late 1980s, the facility has hosted major drag racing events and national touring series, building a reputation as a cornerstone of American motorsports in the Mid-South. IHRA officials said the acquisition reconnects the track’s past with a long-term plan focused on sustainability and growth.
The property is expected to operate as a multi-use destination supporting drag racing, stock car competition, grassroots motorsports, and other large-scale events. IHRA leaders said the goal is to expand the facility’s role beyond racing while maintaining its competitive identity.
Local leaders pointed to the economic impact the track has historically provided to Millington and Shelby County. They said IHRA’s ownership creates new opportunities for tourism, small businesses, and regional engagement tied to motorsports and community events.
“This investment honors the legacy of Memphis Motorsports Park while positioning it for a strong future. IHRA’s acquisition reflects confidence in our region and creates new opportunities for tourism, local businesses, and fan experiences,” said Memphis Mayor Paul Young.
County officials echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the importance of a national sanctioning body committing to the long-term future of the property. They said the facility has the potential to serve families and young people while restoring stability to the site.
“As the Commissioner for District 1, I am thrilled about IHRA’s acquisition of Memphis Motorsports Park. This investment strengthens our local economy, puts world-class racing back on solid ground, and gives our families and young people a safe, exciting place to create memories for years to come. Having a national organization like IHRA committed to the long-term success of this historic facility is exactly the kind of partnership Shelby County needs,” said Amber Mills, Shelby County Commissioner for District 1.
Business leaders in Millington said the track’s reopening under IHRA ownership reinforces the area’s identity as a regional destination. They said continued operations could generate steady economic activity tied to events, visitors, and long-term development.
“Memphis Motorsports Park has long contributed to tourism and economic activity in Millington and Shelby County, and IHRA’s acquisition represents a positive step forward for the facility and the community. This investment supports the continued use of the track as a regional destination while creating opportunities for local businesses and future growth. The Millington Area Chamber of Commerce looks forward to working with IHRA as this next chapter takes shape,” said Chris Thomas, executive director of the Millington Area Chamber of Commerce.
IHRA leadership described the acquisition as both symbolic and strategic. They said honoring the venue’s history will be paired with operational upgrades and a broader schedule of events.
