Shane Gray took a wild ride Sunday afternoon during the second round of eliminations at the O’Reilly NHRA Nationals in Charlotte.

Gray, who defeated Greg Anderson in a first round where several drivers described the racing surface as challenging, apparently drifted outside of the groove in his second round match against Warren Johnson. His Camaro then made an abrupt left and went head on into the wall before spinning around backwards. The errant race car then burst into flames and went airborne and then crashed to the ground.

Gray was checked and released by NHRA emergency services after walking away from the car under his own power.

“It just happened so quick,” explained Gray. “The car barely drifted and then all of a sudden it darted and rolled. The NHRA guys checked me out right away, and other than being a little sore, I’m okay.”

Gray confirmed he plans to compete in next weekend’s NHRA O’Reilly Fallnationals in Dallas.

“We’re going to pull out the GXP,” said Gray.
