Kenny Bernstein, Joe Amato, Warren Johnson and Bruce Larson will return to the starting line for a four-car legends match race during the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway. The special exhibition is part of NHRA’s 75th anniversary season opener.

The legends will compete Friday and Saturday in 550-horsepower 2026 Dodge Charger Sixpacks. The showcase adds a heritage element to the first national event of the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season.

The opening round of the match race is scheduled for 2:20 p.m. on Friday, March 6. It will lead directly into the first round of qualifying for the 12,000-horsepower, 340-mph Funny Car and Top Fuel categories.

The two winners will advance to the final round at 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 7. That run will take place just before the opening round of the Right Trailers Top Fuel All-Star Callout.

The winner of the four-car exhibition will receive the Golden Gator trophy awarded to all Gainesville event champions. The trophy remains one of the most recognizable prizes in the sport.

Johnson brings one of the most decorated résumés in Pro Stock history to the exhibition. He won six world championships and 97 national events during his Hall of Fame career.

Larson competed in both Funny Car and Pro Stock and earned the 1989 Funny Car world championship. His versatility across categories made him a consistent contender during his career.

Bernstein captured six world championships across Top Fuel and Funny Car. He was also instrumental in elevating the professional business model of modern nitro racing.

Amato built his legacy in Top Fuel with 52 national event wins and five world championships. His success came during one of the category’s most competitive eras.

The Legends Match Race is one of several anniversary-focused elements planned for the Gainesville weekend. NHRA is using the season opener to connect its current stars with its most accomplished champions.

Additional Hall of Fame names will also be present throughout the event. Don Garlits, Don Prudhomme, Shirley Muldowney and longtime announcer Bob Frey are scheduled to appear across multiple fan engagements.

Garlits remains one of the most influential figures in Top Fuel history. Prudhomme is a four-time world champion who helped define Funny Car’s growth years.

Muldowney, a three-time Top Fuel world champion, broke barriers while winning at the highest level. Frey has long been associated with NHRA broadcasting and event presentation.

Each is slated to appear at the Top Eliminator Club, in the announcer’s booth and on the Nitro Alley stage.

The match race gives fans a rare opportunity to see four championship drivers return to competition together. It also places the sport’s history on the same stage as today’s 340-mph machines.

“It’s another added item for NHRA’s kickoff to the 75th anniversary season in Gainesville, as fans will see four of NHRA’s biggest names take to the track in 550-horsepower 2026 Dodge Charger Sixpacks.”
