For NHRA, their Become A Racer program is about making the path to becoming a drag racer easier.

NHRA’s “Become a Racer” program extends an accessible and affordable path for individuals to engage with drag racing at NHRA Member Tracks across North America. The Street Legal program emphasizes safety and legality and encourages participants of all skill levels to experience the thrill of competitive drag racing in a controlled setting. The initiative reflects NHRA’s ongoing commitment to combat illegal street racing while fostering a welcoming environment for aspiring racers.

For $65, participants can acquire an NHRA License through the Street Legal program, gaining entry into the world of NHRA drag racing from street-driven vehicles to high-performance cars. In addition to pursuing their racing aspirations, participants enjoy exclusive perks as NHRA members, including discounts from partners and access to NHRA.tv for livestreamed championship drag racing action at national and divisional events. The program further extends medical insurance coverage and its in-house publications.

“For me, going out to the local track is the ultimate,” Top Fuel star Clay Millican said. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a minivan or tricked-out hotrod; it’s a chance to stomp on the loud pedal and not get in trouble. That’s the beauty of going to the track, and getting this license is so inexpensive. It’s so easy to do, and if you really want to go racing, you can do it in a minivan or whatever you want.

Recognition of racers’ performances at NHRA Member Tracks underscores the program’s inclusivity and encouragement towards personal growth and achievement. Unique Street Legal decals marking performance milestones reinforce participants’ accomplishments and dedication to the sport. The program’s emphasis on safety and adherence to vehicle regulations ensures that only street-legal machines are permitted, creating a supportive and welcoming environment where racers of all levels can thrive and enjoy the thrill of NHRA Drag Racing.

“I love the racetrack, so when I’m home, I find my way to the track. I’ve got a hot rod and I don’t want to get after it on the street, so I go to the track. It becomes a lifestyle. It may not become your profession, but it becomes your passion and something you can enjoy with your friends and family. You can go the track, bring your buddies along, and make all the laps you want. The whole process is straightforward and inexpensive, and then you end up with an NHRA license and that’s pretty cool.”

The Street Legal events provide a platform for participants to engage in open time trials and grudge racing, offering an experience for new and seasoned racers. The flexibility of grudge racing empowers participants to select their competition, fostering a collaborative and engaging atmosphere. Participants are encouraged to have fun and make the most of their drag racing experience, whether they aspire to break performance benchmarks or simply relish the opportunity to race in a controlled and exhilarating environment.
