Three-time NHRA world champion Ron Capps will compete in the Thursday Night Thunder Heroes celebrity all-star midget race on June 26 at Indianapolis Raceway Park. The event will feature top names from across motorsports, including NHRA Top Fuel points leader Tony Stewart and sprint car veteran Brad Noffsinger.
Capps, the driver of the NAPA Auto Care Toyota GR Supra Funny Car, will make his oval track debut at IRP in a car fielded by Matt Seymour Racing. The midget car will carry a wrap mimicking his familiar Funny Car livery and is normally driven by two-time Little 500 winner Jake Trainor.
“To be invited to race such a historic track in a midget, and for such a historic name like the Seymour racing family, it just doesn’t get any better,” Capps said. He recently earned his 77th NHRA career win, becoming the most successful Mission Foods Series racer at Bristol Dragway.
The event lineup also includes open-wheel driver Michael Lewis, with additional participants expected to be announced. IRP, the longtime host of the NHRA U.S. Nationals, will serve as the backdrop for the multi-discipline competition.
Capps, the second-winningest driver in Funny Car history, has previously raced in Sprint cars, go-karts, and Chili Bowl events. In 2023, he was the only drag racer to participate in the Superstar Racing Experience at Eldora Speedway.
“Matt Seymour Racing is synonymous with championships,” Capps added. “I grew up watching Thursday Night Thunder and still follow open-wheel racing regularly on FLO Racing.”
To prepare, Capps ran virtual laps at IRP in a midget car on his iRacing rig during a break from NHRA competition. “Getting to drive the #29 after watching Jake Trainor win the Carb Classic this year is pretty neat,” he said.
After the all-star race, Capps will travel to Norwalk, Ohio, to begin qualifying for the NHRA Norwalk Nationals on Friday. He enters this weekend’s Virginia NHRA Nationals ranked fourth in the Mission Foods Series standings.
