PROFILING THE WINNERS

DILLIARD WINS RADIAL VS. WORLD - After finishing runner-up to David Wolfe in October at South Georgia Motorsports Park, Eric Dillard went one better in the Radials vs. the World final for Redemptions 2011, The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia.

Driving Todd Berry’s Pro Line twin-turbocharged,’88 Mustang, Dillard qualified second behind Wolfe with a 4.41 pass at 189.79 mph, which also set top speed for the meet. After a solo pass in the opening round of eliminations, Dillard dropped Dusty Bradford in round two before engaging in the quickest and fastest side-by-side race in drag radial history when he went 4.40 at 187.52 to beat the 4.44 at 177.35 by Paul Major in his twin-turboed 2000 Corvette.

Dillard came oh-so-close to throwing it all away with a ..001 light in the semis against a traction-challenged Carlton Thompson, but prevailed to meet up with Scotty Gaudagno and his nitrous-boosted ’02 Camaro in the final round, where he left with a .017 advantage off the tree and finished 4.41 seconds later at 185.92 mph to beat Gaudagno’s 4.51 at 172.47 mph.

“That was a little too close,” Dillard said of his semi-final flirt with the dreaded red light. “So the next time I just flickered the second (staging) bulb and went back to my normal tree.”

Dillard also said he was looking for his first 4.30 pass on radial tires in the final and while the early incrementals were promising, he felt his back-half numbers suffered because there wasn’t quite enough time between rounds to properly cool his converter fluid.

“But you know what? It went down the track, it kept the wheels down and it got the win. So we’re happy.”

JACKSON WINS DRAG RADIAL - Top qualifier Steve Jackson had a free pass through round one of eliminations when DJ Loaciano couldn’t answer the call to stage, then took down Billy Smith and Chad Henderson before simply breaking the beams to advance from a solo-pass semi to the final round against second-place qualifier Dave Hinzman.

Hinzman left with a sizable .041 holeshot, but the 4.51 at 163.35 by his Procharger-assisted ’87 Mustang wasn’t enough to hold back the 4.40 charge at 179.06 by Jackson, which also was the best pass of the weekend for his Procharger-equipped ‘93 Mustang.

“We had a couple of easy runs, but the car was doing what I told it to do and any time that happens you’ve got a good shot at the win. It was running within a couple thousandths of what I was dialing into it and that’s rare running on street tires,” Jackson said.

 
X275_winner
JUSTIN SMITH WINS X275 - Justin Smith won the ultra-competitive X275 class in his nitrous-boosted, small-block-LS-powered 2001 Camaro built by Mike Graham of Virginia Speed Race Cars. Calling it “a rough week,” Smith said he finished putting his engine together at 2 a.m. Tuesday before the race and didn’t fire it up for the first time until Wednesday afternoon, shortly before loading up and heading to the track from his home in South Hill, VA.

Smith qualified number one in the all-run, 52-car field and made it past James Cordell and Eugene Rodriguez before making a solo pass in the third round, then taking out Chris Evans and Bob Kurgan in the semis.

Remarkably, that set up an X275 final featuring the number-one and –two qualifiers, with Smith earning the win with a 4.89 at 145.36 pass to beat the 5.28 and 127.86 by Pete Harrell and his turbocharged ’04 Cobra.

KEVIN NEAL WINS 275 V 28/10.5 - Lebanon, OH’s Kevin Neal started his weekend on true 10.5-inch slicks, but ended it with 275 radial tires on his ’87 Mustang for the first time and taking home the 275 vs. 28/10.5 class win.

Neal actually was sitting number one on the slicks after the first qualifying session on Friday, but upon bolting on a new set of 10.5s for round two he completely lost the handle on his set-up. After three more rounds of qualifying Neal hadn’t made it off the line cleanly again and dropped to fifth on the list, prompting a Saturday-night visit to the guys at TRZ and JRI Shocks.

“They said, ‘If you can give us three hits on the radials we can make them work,’ so this morning (Sunday, race day) I bought a tech card for the 6.50 (index) class and made two hits and I think I set the 6.50 record at 5.50,” Neal said. “Then the third time I hung the wheels out to about 150 feet, so we were going back-and-forth between too much and too little, but the guys at Double-A Suspension and TRZ, they came through for me, big time. They said give them three hits and they were right on.”

Neal’s wheelstanding pass got him past David Powell before downing Larry Hart, Dewayne Schultz and Bobby Flippin to reach the final, where Joel Greathouse battled his own huge wheelie while Neal laid down a winning 5.16 pass at 131.45 mph.

Neal also credited Bradco Torque Converters, Bischoff Racing Engines, NLR and PTP Racing for helping him reach the winner’s circle.

HENDERSON WINS NO BOOST - “It was a team effort; there’s not one thing I could single out,” said Chad Henderson, though he did credit his David Lemon-built car, PTC torque convertor, Holley fuel injection and tune-up by Monty Smith for their help winning the No Boost final at SGMP.

Driving a pristine ’85 Buick Regal, Henderson started from the number-two slot in a 15-car field and downed Pierre Burley, Jason Richards and Rickey Fox before facing off with number-five starter Francis Johnson and his ’98 Firebird in the final.

Johnson left first with a .021 holeshot, but his 4.78 at 141.02 couldn’t hold off Henderson’s 4.65 at 155.56 mph, his best run of the day in the No Boost class.

“We had no problems all weekend,” said Henderson, who also entered the car in Outlaw Radial and reached the quarter-finals there. “We made 16 or 17 hits and I think 14 of them were better than our personal best coming in here, so it was a career weekend. You can’t ask for any better than that.”

Meanwhile, Gerime Rooks and his Harvest, AL-based ’95 Mustang, prevailed in Ultimate Street after going 5.25 at 136.15 over the 5.39 at 131.51 by Carneyville, KY’s Adam Preston in a ’93 Mustang.

THE FINAL RUN - The final car to take the track at Redemption 2011, The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia was Brad Brand’s Extreme 10.5 twin-turbocharged ‘08 Mustang, formerly campaigned by John Nobile in IHRA Pro Stock trim. Brand tried to give the crowd their only three-second run of the weekend, but came up just a little short in this pre-ADRL season test pass with a 4.02 at just over 200 mph.

SUNDAY NOTEBOOK - DILLARD DOMINATES DRAG RADIAL IN GEORGIA

Fresh off a Pro Mod test session that he says helped improve his driving style, Eric Dillard romped through the top-billed Radials vs. the World class Feb. 25-27, ORTC_trophiesat the Outlaw Radial Tire Championship’s (ORTC’s) Redemption 2011, The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia at South Georgia Motorsports Park (SGMP).

“Making all those back-to-back runs in testing last week let me try things without a lot of pressure,” Dillard said. “I was able to really see what little changes could bring and it really cleared my head from second guessing myself when it came time to race.”  

Joining Dillard in the SGMP winner’s circle were number-one qualifier Steve Jackson in Outlaw Radial, Justin Smith in the huge X275 class, Kevin Neal in 275 (radials) vs. 28/10.5 (slicks), Gerime Rooks in Ultimate Street, and Chad Henderson in No Boost for naturally-aspirated cars.

He made a track-testing 4.56 solo pass in the opening round of eliminations, then dropped a 4.47 win on Dusty Bradford in round two.

In the quarter-finals for the 32-car field, Dillard made up half of the quickest and fastest side-by-side race in drag radial history when he went 4.40 at 187.52 to beat the 4.44 at 177.35 by Paul Major in his twin-turboed 2000 Corvette.

The semis saw Dillard win with a 4.48 over traction-challenged Carlton Thompson, while Scotty Gaudagno advanced to the final past Brad Bonnette.

Dillard left with a .017 holeshot and never looked back, finishing with a 4.41 at 185.92 mph over a game 4.51 effort at 172.47 by “Scotty G” in his nitrous-Henderson_NBwinnerassisted ‘02 Camaro.

After the race Dillard revealed Berry had told him and crew chief Steve Petty that if they won at the Cecil, Georgia, strip they could split all the prize money between themselves.

“I don’t think it changed the way we raced at all,” Dillard said. “We would’ve tried just as hard to win, but it was really, really cool for Todd to do that for us. He obviously didn’t have to and me and Steve really appreciate it.”  

In Outlaw Radial, Jackson prevailed with a record-setting 4.40 pass at 179.06 mph in his Procharger-equipped, small-block-Chevy-powered ’93 Mustang over Dave Hinzman with a solid 4.51 at 163.35 mph.

Remarkably, in an all-run field of 52 entries, the number-one and –two qualifiers in X275 faced off in the final round, with top qualifier Justin Smith earning the win with a 4.89 at 145.36 from his nitrous-boosted 2001 Camaro over the turbocharged ’04 Cobra of Pete Harrell’s at 5.28 and 127.86 mph.

Neal got the job done in 275 vs. 28/105 with a 5.16 at 131.45 in his ’87 Mustang against Joel Greathouse, who battled a massive final-round wheelstand that brought him dangerously close to the left wall in a 6.02 shut-off run.

Rooks, in another SBC-powered ’95 Mustang, prevailed in Ultimate Street after going 5.25 at 136.15 over the 5.39 at 131.51 by Adam Preston in a similar ride.

The big, black Buick driven by Henderson laid down a 4.65 pass at 155.56 mph in the No Boost final to defeat Francis Johnson’s 4.78 at 141.02 in a ’98 Firebird.

BIG UPSET - Easily the biggest upset of the opening round of eliminations came in the premier Radials vs. the World class, where number-32 starter Don Burton (shown) beat top dog David Wolfe.

Wolfe took a huge .081 advantage off the start, but immediate tire spin allowed Burton to cruise to a 4.95 win at 154.25 mph in his twin-Procharger-equipped 1980 Mustang. Burton, a former NMRA Super Street Outlaw racer, completed the car on the Monday before the race and fired it up just long enough to make sure its transbrake worked before arriving at South Georgia Motorsports Park.

Wolfe later explained the rear-end gears in his Mustang broke during a record-setting 4.35 pass in Saturday-night qualifying.

“We changed them up last night and apparently they were broken a long time because these new ones were a lot freer and our power settings were way off. It’s not surprising really because it seems like we broke everything we had here this weekend. It seems like a fitting end.”

2007 ADRL Pro Nitrous World Champion Jamie Hancock is at the Cecil, GA, strip this weekend driving an ’88 Mustang fitted with a Fulton 737 on four stages of nitrous for car owner Brian Allen. After qualifying 27th in Radials vs. the World, Hancock made a single in round one of eliminations after the ’68 Camaro of scheduled opponent Dewayne Mills broke in the previous night’s qualifying session. Riding on 29/10.5 slicks, the Opelika, AL, college student said the ride is “pretty calm right now. It doesn’t feel like 4.80s.”

J.R. Gibson (near lane) and Marty Stinnett each had their own problems to deal with in the opening round of Outlaw Radial eliminations, but Stinnett recovered first to advance to round two.

LATE NIGHT SWAP - Oklahoma racer Dewayne Mills escaped disaster in Saturday night’s final round of Radials vs. the World qualifying when David Reese crossed lanes behind him at the end of a wild wheelie, but his ’68 Camaro still suffered serious damage with its intercooler splitting open at the welds late in the run and the engine developing “a squeaking that I didn’t like,” he said.

Undaunted and qualified 7th, Mills and crew set about swapping in a new 598 cubic incher boosted with a Procharger F3, but quickly discovered a problem with hooking up its oiling system and had to call it a weekend.

“Everything was going good until the last night of qualifying,” said Mills, who revealed his golf cart’s rearend also broke while coming to retrieve him after the ill-fated run. “But we had fun and we’ll be back this fall. We’re not done here yet.”


Modeste_tunes
“Mustang Mike” Modeste was hard at work on his ignition system late Saturday night after qualifying 18th of 24 entries in Outlaw Radial at SGMP.

“It’s been giving us trouble all weekend,” said the Brooklyn, NY-based racer. “Hopefully this’ll take care of it and we’ll be okay tomorrow (in eliminations).”

A pair of bumper-scraping wheelstands in X275 qualifying had number-four starter Rich Bruder and his NJ-based crew working on rebuilding the steering rack on his Fontana 351 with a Procharger-equipped ’88 Mustang.

Jeff Kyle entered the fourth and final round of 275 vs. 28/10.5 qualifying in first place at 4.78 seconds, but after back-to-back passes by Joel Greathouse and Terry Elim, he’ll start from third in eliminations tomorrow. Greathouse was up first Saturday afternoon and took over the top spot from third with a 4.76 at 156.53-mph pass in his Oakland, KY-based 1990 Mustang. But Elim, who was pushed from second to third by Greathouse, responded with a stellar 4.72 at 156.23 in his ’03 Cobra

Dan Jackson of Lebanon, TN, lost his left rear wheel when all four studs sheared off at their base right off the launch of his ’79 Mustang in 6.50 index qualifying on Saturday afternoon. Note the brake drum skidding off to the left in the photo. Fortunately, Jackson emerged unscathed from the accident and his car appeared to suffer minimal damage.

Clearly establishing himself as the class of the field in Radials vs. the World, David Wolfe officially lowered the Drag Radial record to 4.354 seconds at 188.62 in the fourth and final round of qualifying.

Shortly after Wolfe’s record run, Eric Dillard served notice he’s headed for the .30s, too, improving to a 4.41 at 189.79 mph, which is top speed of the meet so far, too.
 

“We ran a .48, then a .44 and now a .41 and we’ve got five more shots at it tomorrow,” Dillard said, referring to eliminations for the 32-car Radials vs. the World field. “We’re feeling pretty good about it right now.”

David Reese of Rockmart, GA, went for a wild ride in his last qualifying pass for the Radials vs. the World class. Starting from the left lane, Reese’s ’93 Mustang went into a huge wheelstand off the start, eventually riding on only its left, rear tire until Reese brought the car down and crossed the centerline behind the ’68 Camaro of Oklahoma racer Dewyne Mills.

Paul Major broke into the top 10 in Radials vs. the World qualifying with a 4.60 pass at 176.28 mph in his turbo-boosted 2001 Corvette.

A solid crowd and good car count was on hand Saturday night at South Georgia Motorsports Park for final qualifying for the ORTC Nights the Lights Went Out in Georgia, Part II. Eliminations for the six drag radial classes begin at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Clarence Cloud of Vidalia, GA, ran 5.31 at 129.87 mph in his 1941 Willys to win the 5.30 index class final over Dillon Voss, who broke out with a 5.26/124.91 combination Saturday night at SGMP.


5.70_winner
Melvin Pfeifer made the long tow from Biloxi, MS, worthwhile with the 5.70 index win in his ’75 Duster. In a double-breakout final, Pfeifer ran 5.68 at 119.68 to David Harvey’s 5.67 at 122.77 in his ’84 Trans Am.


6.50_winner
Both finalists ran right on the number in the 6.50 index final and produced a one-thousandth of a second margin of victory after Kenny Ford of Muscle Shoals, AL, was able to overcome a slim .005 holeshot with a 6.502 run at 100.53 mph in his ’69 Camaro to beat the 6.508 at 108.22 by Matt Powell in an ’85 Chevy.


7.50_winner
The 7.50 index title went to Louisville, KY’s Clark Carroll and his ’86 Cutlass with an unopposed 7.59 at 90.48-mph pass when Dennis Smith was unable to answer the call with his ’87 Mustang. Also picking up a win in the Open Comp index class was Walt Shipley of Tampa, FL, with his 1970 Nova beating the ’83 Oldsmobile of Georgia racer Chris VanLandingham.

David Wolfe’s top qualifying 4.38 from the opening round of Radials vs. the World qualifying for the ORTC Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia, Pt. II, held up through round three Saturday afternoon at South Georgia Motorsports Park. In fact, the top seven retained their positions, but Amanda “Puddin” Long
(shown) made the jump up from 10th to 8th with a 4.61 pass, while Brad Bonnett’s 4.62 at 170.32 took over 9th place, pushing the first-round 4.66 by Kevin Fiscus down to 10th of 35 entries.

In the last of four rounds of No Boost qualifying, top qualifier Brian McGee lowered his ET to a record 4.578 seconds at 163.89 mph, shattering the former marks of 4.66 at 154 by number-five qualifier at Valdosta Francis Johnson.

Kirk Hatley, driving lifetime friend Eric Kenward’s Florida-based Chevy station wagon for only the second time (and first time in nearly two years), drove straight to the top of the Ultimate Street class in fourth-round qualifying with a 5.220 at 133.92 mph.

Kenward, meanwhile arrived at the track this morning immediately after becoming a father for the fourth time at 3:37 a.m. Friday when his wife, Lori, gave birth to six-pound-13-ounce baby Mallory.

“She just told me to go and make us some money,” said Kenward, who is driving Bruce Robert’s ’91 Mustang in the X275 drag radial class. Kenward was 43rd after one pass with one more qualifying session to go.

FRIDAY NOTEBOOK - WE'RE UNDERWAY

A LONG DAY TO LAUNCH - The Outlaw Radial Tire Championship’s (ORTC’s) Nights the Lights Went Out in Georgia, Part II opened under rainy skies Feb. 25, but the wet stuff was gone by noon and within a couple of hours the eighth-mile action at South Georgia Motorsports Park (SGMP) was well underway.

Only the six drag radial (DR) classes (Holley No Boost, Billet Atomizer Racing Injectors Ultimate Street, TCI Outlaw Radial, VP Race Fuels Outlaw 275 vs. 28X10.5, TRZ Motorsports X275 and PTC Radials vs. the World) made laps today in a pair of qualifying rounds. With only a few cars left in the lanes, round two of qualifying for the Radials vs. the World class was called off early due to a lengthy clean-up for oil and dew settling on the track.

Saturday’s schedule calls for two more DR qualifiers, plus qualifying and eliminations in 7.50, 6.50, 5.70, 5.30 and Open Comp index classes.

The SGMP staging lanes were full with a nice assortment of drag radial rides for the ORTC Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia, Part II.

After taking the top spot with an excellent 4.38 in round one of Radials vs. the World, David Wolfe broke an oil line at the end of his burnout for round two. The Fort Worth, TX-based racer later said he’s got a “happy” race car, though, and expects to go a little quicker on Saturday.

Four-time and defending NMRA Drag Radial champ Jason Lee improved from a 4.99 to 4.97 at 142.76 mph to place third in the Extreme 275 class after two rounds of qualifying.

Amanda “Puddin” Long, wife of race promoter Donald Long, ran a pair of 4.68s in Radials vs. the World qualifying that had her ninth after the first round, with the second yet to be completed Saturday morning.

Paul Major hangs ‘em high Friday night with his late-model Corvette in Radials vs. the World qualifying at South Georgia Motorsports Park.

Hanging out in the SGMP tower and enjoying the drag radial show was 2010 NHRA Pro Mod World Champion Von Smith, fresh off winning the 2010-11 Arabian Pro Extreme world championship in Qatar just one week earlier. Smith, from Oak Ridge, TN, made the trek down to the Valdosta, GA, track prior to attending the Supercross race at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Saturday night. When asked if he was thinking of making the switch to DR, Smith responded, “I wouldn’t say no!”

Morris
Steve Morris managed a best of just 5.48 with his fan-favorite Chevy wagon to tentatively place him 22nd in Radials vs. the World qualifying before the second round has been completed, but ran a 4.81 in testing on Thursday that would have put him just outside the top ten.


Kurban_Q1
After this wheelstanding 6.80 in the opening round of X275 qualifying with his ’86 Mustang, Hoschton, GA’s Bob Kurgan responded with a 5.13 at 138.99 in round two that has him 18th heading into Saturday’s two qualifiers.
