Texas racing was on full display as local racers; Clark Smiley and Joel Covington celebrated with their teams in the winner’s circle following their final round wins at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, South Central Division, Texas Sportsman Challenge at Royal Purple Raceway.

           

Smiley, Denver City, Texas, ceded the starting line advantage to Ray Goodman, Boerne Texas in the Comp Eliminator final round. However, Smiley was able to pull out the win, registering a victory pass of 7.343 seconds, 183.72 mph; Goodman runner-upped at 7.435 seconds, 179.06 mph.

           

Fans in attendance were treated to an all Texas battle in the Super Stock final round. Joel Covington, Center, Texas, and Korey Mawhee, Frisco, Texas lined up at the starting line. Covington, earned his third Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Wally and his first in Super Stock, as Mawhee fouled at the starting line.

 

Brian Heath of Fort Worth, Texas joined fellow Texan drivers in the winner’s circle. Heath defeated Cole Prejean, St. Armant, La., in the SDPC Raceshop Top Sportsman final round. Heath ran 7.102, 193.54, outpacing Prejean who runner-upped at 7.340, 177.46. Mallori Rodgers, Mcalester, Okla., gained the starting line advantage and never looked back as she ran 6.417, 211.76 to outlast Mark Jones, Marrero, La., in the SDPC Raceshop Top Dragster final round.

 

Derek Dorey, Kingwood, Texas scored a victory pass of 9.185, 116.99 in the Top Sportsman Motorcycle final round. Duane Lansing, Wylie, Texas recorded a runner up pass of 11.460, 129.88.

 

The other drivers visiting the winner’s circle were Kevin Helms in Stock Eliminator; Trene Cressonie in Super Comp; Chris Edison in Super Gas; and Clint Parker in Super Street.
