CompetitionPlus.com’s Roger Richards remembered Russell as a special person.
“The racing world has lost a great soul,” Richards said. “We are saddened yet celebrate Toney’s life as he has crossed his last finish line.”
Russell was best known in the pits for his strong Christian faith. He raced ADRL because their races were on Friday and Saturday. He refused to race on Sunday and had in the past qualified for races on Saturday and sat out eliminations on Sunday.
Russell is survived by wife Fonda and children Paul, Kelly and Jana. He had six grandchildren.
