Miles the Monster knows who his Daddy is.

The fictional mascot of Dover International Speedway has now been tamed ten times by six-time Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson.

Johnson survived a green-white-checkered finish and received a push from second place finisher Kevin Harvick to win Sunday's FedEx 400 benefitting Autism Speaks. With the victory Johnson  joins NASCAR legends Richard Petty, David Pearson, Dale Earnhardt, Sr, and Darrell Waltrip as the only drivers in NASCAR history to win ten times at a single track.

Johnson, who led only once for 23 laps, believes this Dover win was a strategic effort since on track passes were hard to manage.

“What a long hard fought day to get to the front," Johnson said. "It seemed like four or five of us could run the same speed and just couldn’t really pass.  We did a great job of hanging in there.  My pit stops were awesome.  We kind of took a chance on pit sequence to pick off a couple of spots to get us from fifth to third, third to a shot for the win.  Then that last set of tires I was running (Kevin) Harvick down and we ended up staying on them and his car didn’t look as strong as it was early in the day and we were able to take advantage of it.”

The victory is Johnson's fourth of the 2015 season and the 74th win of his storied Sprint Cup career.

Johnson’s veteran crew chief Chad Knaus made the pit calls which put Johnson in the position for the victory despite being on older tires than most of his late race competition.

“I didn't know if Chad was just being a car salesman or what, but he told me the guys on two hadn't been very successful, and I wanted to believe him, so I believed him on that one,” Johnson admitted.  “And we fired off well and maintained -- I know you're going to say what you've got to say.  We got going, and the guys on four didn't come through and the guys on two didn't go anywhere.  I thought, well, damn, he wasn't lying to me.  We're going to be in good shape.  It was really about getting down the front stretch on the restarts, getting up through the gears well.

“In that last restart Harvick hammered me in the back of the car and shot me out in front of the 5 (Kasey Kahne), and once I had the racetrack to myself, we were in control then.”

Kevin Harvick's second place finish becomes his ninth top-two finish this season; it's also the fourth time he's finished in the runner-up position to Jimmie Johnson this year.

Harvick, the defending Sprint Cup champion, admits restarts cost him a chance to earn his third victory of the season.

“We just struggled at the end of the race on restarts, really all day on the restarts," Harvick explained. "Once the track bar broke, we were pretty much in a box and just kind of had to hold on for the first 25 laps and if we weren't in the front then we struggled to just maintain what we had.  All in all, everybody did a great job, and I think when you look at Dover it's been a good racetrack for us.  We've led laps and just haven't quite finished it yet, but a good, solid day.”

Kyle Larson finished in third place with Kasey Kahne just behind in fourth place. Aric Almirola brought home a fifth place finish.

Martin Truex, Jr, led a race-high 131 laps but finished in sixth place. It becomes the third consecutive race in which Truex has led the most laps but failed to earn the victory. Truex, who notched his first career Sprint Cup victory in 2007 at Dover, doesn't believe his team hit on the setup all weekend.

"We had a good car today but it was never right," Truex admitted.  "We were never right yesterday all through practice. We made some changes today, and we made some gains on it, but never really got it where we needed it. Clean air was huge. When we were out front, we were okay. It just never turned good all day long. It just eventually caught up to us.”

Jamie McMurray finished in seventh place followed by Paul Menard, Clint Bowyer and Jeff Gordon rounded out the top-ten.

Pole-sitter Denny Hamlin led four different times for 118 laps but was involved in an accident with Kurt Busch on lap 386 which forced him to settle for a 21st place finish, three laps down. Kurt Busch finished in 31st place.

Heading into next weekend’s race at Pocono Raceway, Kevin Harvick continues to lead the Sprint Cup points standings with a 44 point advantage over second place Martin Truex, Jr. Despite the victory, Jimmie Johnson remains in third place, 76 points behind Harvick.
