FEEDBACK ARTICLE - A
LAST STAND FOR THE OLD SCHOOL - THE CHI-TOWN 25
Great story!
As I sat here reading this piece, I went through a lot of very
special memories of the early days of fuel funny car racing. I had the honor and
priviledge of being part of the Chi-Town group, as their driver for 2 years ['75
and '77]. No one can begin to imagine what it's like to work with, live with,
and race with Austin Coil. The man is truly a genious. No one in the Nitro
racing world ever did so much, with so little. I have a lot of fun to this day,
being able to share the memories of the good old days in fuel racing, especially
the ones with coil. I could, or should, write a book about it. Having worked for
Frank Hawley at the school for 6 years, before I retired, gave me many chances
to relive some of those memories. Sometimes, during the down time when it was
raining in Florida, Frank and I would talk to the students, and compare stories.
I dont get to talk to Austin much these days, he's a pretty busy guy, but when
we do get to chat, it's a lot of smilin, laffin, knee slappin memories.
This
modern day fuel racing is way too serious, and stressfull. These guys are all
walkin heart attacks. In the early days....
