FIRST-YEAR NHRA ‘BOWLING FOR RILEY’ EVENT A SUCCCESS

The first-year “Bowling for Riley” event hosted by NAPA AUTO PARTS and Don Schumacher Racing on May 19 was an instant success, 
as
NHRA fans and drivers showed up at Brownsburg (Ind.) Bowl in support of
Indiana’s only comprehensive hospital dedicated exclusively to the care
of children, Riley Hospital for Children.
Over $9,000 was raised in just over four hours from entry fees, the sale of silent auction items, a 50/50, a live auction, and voluntary donations. “This is just another great event that DSR and Riley Hospital have put together,” noted Ron Capps, pilot of the NAPA AUTO PARTS Funny Car and current NHRA class points leader. “Our team owner, Don Schumacher, is very supportive of these kinds of events, and it was great to see all of the NHRA drivers and teams behind it as well.”

DSR drivers Capps, Tony Schumacher, Cory McClenathan and Matt Smith were joined by fellow NHRA stars Antron Brown, Morgan Lucas, Shawn Langdon, Cruz Pedregon, Tony Pedregon, Tommy Johnson Jr., Melanie Troxel, Andrew Hines and Eddie Krawiec.
The competitors included 22 teams of four bowlers plus 13 drivers. Drivers bowled with two teams on adjoining lanes and rotated to new lanes for each game, giving fans an opportunity to bowl with three different NHRA stars. The "celebrity" scores were added to those of both "fan" teams. Many NHRA crew chiefs and crew members also participated, adding to the racing aura of the event.
Crowds cheered for each of four perfect 300 games in the 9-pin "No Tap" format (nine pins down on the first ball is scored a strike) that were accomplished throughout the contest. A foursome from Hoopeston, Ill., took home the first-place trophy by knocking down the most pins (3,385) in the three-game set. NHRA fans Tony Gress, Bob Hamilton, Brandon Hamilton and George Fix made up that team. They wore NAPA shirts commemorating Capps' 2008 TV spots and bowled their first game with Capps as their "celebrity."

"It’s easy to see how NAPA and DSR have partnered to form one of the elite teams in NHRA racing. They do everything with excellence. We are grateful they bring that same dedication to helping Riley kids.”
DSR has raised over $50,000 the past three years during its annual U.S. Nationals Open House.
The 2009 DSR U.S. Nationals Open House is set for Friday, Sept. 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Event details will be posted on www.shoeracing.com in the coming months.
