Apparently he’s very serious. The motorsports mogul and owner of zMax Dragway will fly a planeload of local media from the Charlotte market to the NHRA U.S. Nationals for a day to get a glimpse of the NHRA’s most prestigious event.

ZMax Dragway held its press conference yesterday for the Charlotte media announcing a second national event for the 2010 before the well-attended media event. Several major venues including ESPN, SPEED and a score of the area’s major television and newspaper networks were present.

One might find it difficult to determine whether or not the large media contingent was in attendance for the press conference or the stand-up routine performed by Smith and John Force.

Last year Force failed to qualify for the NHRA Carolinas Nationals and that became a large topic of conversation.

“I asked Bruton on a radio show why he wanted two races,” Force said. “He responded to me, ‘Johnny I took one of the NHRA’s largest stars?’ I asked, ‘How is it?’ I expected him to see Prudhomme or Bernstein.

“Then Bruton said, ‘You, I put your name on the grandstand,” Force explained. “I said, ‘Bruton, I figured after I failed to qualify that you were going to take my name off of it.

“I asked him about why he got two races, and he told me that he figured if I didn’t qualify this would give me a second chance.”
