SPRADLIN WINS IHRA DIVISIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP; NARROWLY MISSES NHRA TITLE

Casey Spradlin and the Spradlin Motorsports Top Sportsman and Top Dragster team experienced a career best season in 2009 with an IHRA Top Dragster Championship. The victories started early during the season with Spradlin’s first ever National Event during the NHRA Jeg’s Cajun SportsNats, Belle Rose, LA.  His streak of winnings continued throughout the summer with a Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series (LODRS) win at Memphis Motorsports Park and then an IHRA Summit ProAm event victory in Holly Springs, MS.

“This was just a great season,” Spradlin said.  “Everything fell into place at the right time. We had a good car and Tim Gaines Performance engine combination was just phenomenal.  The car was there and if I did my job, we ended up in the winner’s circle every time.  Winning the “big” Wally is just a special moment.”

“The feeling of being able to join the short list of National event winners is indescribable.”

Spradlin Motorsports led the NHRA Division 2 Top Dragster points throughout the summer months and a series of strong finishes at the IHRA Division 2 races lead up to a championship battle with former world champion Troy Williams Jr.  The team traveled over 1200 miles to battle for the IHRA Division 2 championship at the Summit ProAm event in Epping, NH.  The long trip was well worth the drive as Spradlin Motorsports was able to secure its first division championship.. That same weekend, Spradlin also won the Top Sportsman class in his newly acquired Tim McAmis built ’37 Chevy Coupe.

“Going into the race in Epping with such a long drive to think about it, was pretty tough.  The way the season had been going, we felt pretty good because we only needed to win one round to win the championship.  However, on the last qualifying attempt we broke a lifter and had a mad thrash to make it to first round, which was kind of good because I didn’t over-think the race.  In the end, we were blessed with a win.”

With an IHRA Championship in the bag, the team then turned their focus on the NHRA Top Dragster Championship. Spradlin trailed multi-time champ Steve Furr by only two points, heading into the final season LODRS race in Reynolds, GA.  Tire shake in the first round would ultimately prove costly as Casey was not able to capitalize on Furr’s first round loss, finishing up the season 1-2 in the championship points battles.

“I would have never predicted we would perform so well this season with two new cars, and a totally different engine combo, but sometimes it just takes a change in scenery to turn things around. I can’t thank my parents and my wife, Amber, enough for their continued support.  We were truly blessed this season.”
